Better support for albums and tracks with multiple artists

Bump. Plex and Plexamp would become my main music source if more and better metadata could be supported. The compilation shortcoming and the complete lack of a composer field makes this impossible. C’mon guys…you’ve got a great product here. Don’t rest on your laurels and let it stagnate.

Still hoping for a better tomorrow (sigh)

Bumping this again with another reminder that I am willing to pay a bounty for plex, inc to understand that there can be more than one artist per track.

How are we tracking with this? Anything us folks with a shield pro can assist with? This request is about to hit 5th grade!

I understand that implementing this change on the back-end is challenging. It’s clear why there might be hesitation. However, considering there has been a forum topic on this issue for nearly a decade, with numerous (paying) users expressing their concerns about the missing functionality, perhaps it’s time to address it.

At the very least, a statement or update would be appreciated, as many users currently feel unheard.

I recently started using Plexamp and it’s great but this particular design choice is baffling. Album compilations have been a thing since well before mass printing of vinyl records. This is a surprisingly large omission. I understand it would likely require some database changes, but I sincerely hope this is on the roadmap.

Thank you again for all your efforts!

Bump, how has this been an issue for 10 years? Does anyone at Plex actually use their product?

It’s truly fascinating how, despite countless requests and clear demand from users, the Plex developers continue to conveniently overlook the need for this functionality. Time and time again, the community has voiced its concerns, yet somehow, this critical feature remains absent—as if pretending it doesn’t exist will make the problem go away. It’s almost impressive how consistently they manage to sidestep addressing it, leaving users to wonder if their feedback is even being considered at all. You’d think that after so much discussion, there would at least be some acknowledgment, but instead, it feels like shouting into the void while the developers remain blissfully indifferent.

As a paying member I’m still waiting for this feature. I can’t believe it’s been so long and no update from the team on if it will ever happen.

Been really into plex music / plexamp lately. Have spent a large amount effort getting my collection filled with all of my albums. The most annoying thing I face is that when I create collections and playlists based on artists/albums (track collections / playlists can’t be filtered currently) is that music under various artists is impossible for me to perfectly match to what I want. The only way I could possibly correctly filter things the way I want is to forgo all my albums where someone is under “various artists” and force them into a different album under that artist. I wouldn’t even be able to do this for all artists that might be featured on a song either. It shouldn’t have to be this way.

A post was split to a new topic: Plex splitting album despite same album artist

pretty sure @elan is aware of this but the silence is deafening…

i’ve posted about this multiple times. lots of work to do, not currently working on it.

crazy that this is still not supported, probably switching back to navidrome because of this

Also wanted to chime in on this. I added my Eurobeat collection to plex, with over 100 albums, and every song is tagged correctly, with the album artist set as ‘Various Artists’ and the artist field set as the actual artist. Plex correctly shows the albums, and even shows the artist name next to ever song, but if I click on the artist name, it just shows me the ‘various artists’ page. I also cannot even search on an artist name, it doesn’t return anything.

I bought Plex pass for the premium music features, but if I can’t even play music from the same artist, then what’s the point? I honestly can’t imagine that it is difficult to at least create an internal database that tracks every artist and what songs they made. When a song is added, you add it to the database like before, but you also add this song to the corresponding artist in a separate list. This might not be considered ‘clean software practices’ but at least it would easy to add and fix an issue that has apparently be annoying the community for 10 years!

Navidrome just added multiple artist support. Plex should follow their approach Navidrome Tagging Guidelines - Handling Multiple Artists.

This would be a much better way to handle artists. Treat them like a tag and be able to add a single or multiple artists. This way when you search for that artist it will pull everything. Maybe options for how the artists are separated as well I know some systems grab it by either , ; / so having multiple options would be great.

Jellyfin supports Navidrome-like (but not quite the same) tagging as per link above. By default it will parse ARTIST and ALBUMARTIST with multiple tags or separators. On a Jellyfin music library, you can also turn on “Prefer ARTISTS tag if available” and search the ARTISTS tag. Either way multiple artists works.

Bumping even though it seems there is no point of doing it as per elan’s reply.
