Better support for albums and tracks with multiple artists

Finding this topic today after spending two hours dealing with metadata names and various artists nonsense for Compilation albums and soundtracks. Literally just put a checkbox in the song’s info that says “part of compilation” and call it a day.

This entire experience screwed up 10+ albums and the added date for all of them. So now they magically are added today instead of over 10 years ago; which forces me to have to edit the database because we’re also endlessly waiting for a simple field to edit the added date.

Neither of these features will ever happen, given how long these topics have been open.

Hello, since supporting multiple artists at the database level is not feasible in the short term, I request an improvement in the multi-valued tag reading stage for album artists, so that only the first value is read, rather than values such as 14?;Aosaki that are impossible to navigate by album artist, After all, each individual album artist 14? and Aosaki exists in the database.

To be honest, Plex is complete trash for music usage. It (via Plexamp) could be so magnificent, but since its developers cannot be bothered to fix issues from a whole decade ago, they’ll never reach their full potential. I am so sick and tired of spending hours and hours and hours manually tagging everything perfectly, but Plex gets tripped up by having multiple artists in the same album. And it can’t even obey its own setting to choose local metadata. The fact I have to tag everything in a special little unintuitive way to work around Plex’s jank is absurd, especially after so many years of development to get this all right.

Not every multi-artist album is a compilation. For example, many soundtracks have several artists. They often use a mix of licensed music and BGM tracks by composers. Plex should recognise that these have their own artists. The simple solution, since Plex is too dumb to parse multiple artists with separators (such as a semicolon), should be to tag the album’s tracks with their respective artists under the “artist” tag, but also use “Various Artists” for “album artist” on every track. But no, Plex sees this way of tagging and decides to attribute every “Various Artists” album to some random artist in my database for no apparent reason.

It’s such a timesink just to make this hunka junk work that I might return to Spotify. I hate to say it, but I’d rather be spoonfed an incomplete music service if maintaining one’s own digital music library is made highly challenging and time-consuming as a result of shoddy software.

Amen!

You said totally everything I’m struggling with and described all my feelings with Plex music.

Thanks Got is Spotify finally bringing loose-less format to life.

That’s was the only reason why I started to build my own Plex music library with loose-less tracks but…. It’s so time consuming and at the end of the day it’s still sucks…

I’m not going to invest one more minute into the not working piece of s…..oftware.

The simple solution, since Plex is too dumb to parse multiple artists with separators (such as a semicolon), should be to tag the album’s tracks with their respective artists under the “artist” tag, but also use “Various Artists” for “album artist” on every track.

This is exactly how I handle soundtracks and compilations. Album artist is Various Artists and each track has their respective artists. Not sure if I’m not understanding you properly, but it has worked like that for years for me.

Keeping this alive. The metadata part of Plex/PlexAmp needs a complete overhaul. Classical music is unusable in PlexAmp without a Composer field, not to mention the Multiple Artist/Single Album problem bemoaned by so many of us above.

Those of us who have paid real money for this software expect support from our vendor. If Microsoft had been this unresponsive to customer input (and they are not perfect, by any means!), I doubt they would have been as successful. This is just common business practice: 1) Meet your customers’ needs
2) If physically unable to do so, tell the customer why, so that expectations can be managed.

P.S. Thanks for finally fixing the collections problem I reported several years ago. Sometime in the past three months, it started working properly and I failed to notice.

I would love for Plex.inc to remove music from the main server instance and separate the music system for something that can actually update and get developed properly. Plexamp is such an amazing software that deserves to be paired with an equivalent quality music server.

I can recommend Navidrome. I had the same quirks as you, but Navidrome handles multiple artists perfectly. I switched and never looked back.

if i had a decade to fix a problem at work and made 0 progress i would be fired, how is it possible that nothing has happened with this? why is every single song that has a feature showing up as a new artist? i have 169 unique artists in my library according to spotify, according to plex, i have thousands. come on man
