Wouldn't it be great if the remote control feature of Android, iPhone/iPod and similar also could control units via Bluetooth?
While remote over Ethernet is great in most cases, it does not work in the car. We use Plex for synced content for both kids in the back seat, and without a remote control we need to climb back to change movies. How much safer and more convenient if we could simply use the Plex app with Bluetooth on Android/iPhone to remote control the iPads strapped to the back seats, out of the hands of the youngest kids.
Although I see where this would be great there is a simple solution as well, just get a small portable wifi hotspot, they cost about $20 plug it in the car and have all devices connect to it via wifi, then you can use the current built in remote control.
The problem with a mini-wireless LAN in the car is that it cannot be connected to anything outside, and at the same time prohibits the phones to be used for anything else. It's nice for the young kids to watch movies, the elder to surf and the wife to be able to check for traffic alerts and such that all requires being online with 3G/4G connections..
I haven't tried this, but a simple alternative would be to turn your iPhone hotspot functionality on, and have the iPad connect automatically to that iPhone. That way they should be on the same network (allowing you to control the iPad Plex client using the iPhone Plex client), while still having internet available on your iPhone at the same time. Either that or use the WiFi solution above. You can simply turn WiFi off on the iPhone after the movie has started and you want to connect to the internet. I agree bluetooth would be nice, but it seems to me that there are enough workable alternatives if remote control in the car is a must-have feature...
