When I select Plex cast in the iPad app it only gives options for airplay or bluetooth. My Windows box has only wifi and ethernet. Currently, I’m using Teamviewer to control the Plex server from the iPad but if there’s a way to use the iOS app that would be better. I only need it as a remote. Teamviewer is overkill.
What do you mean with “remote”?
There is no need to control the server remotely, because you can fire up a web browser on any device and point it to https://app.plex.tv
Or do you actually want to control a Plex player which is running on the same machine as the Plex server?
The only Plex client app which can be remote controlled is “Plex HTPC”. Download below.
I was following instructions here:
but when I select the cast button all I get is Select a Player: airplay or bluetooth. No option to select the web browser on the server box. Neither Chrome nor Firefox show up as players on my iPad but apparently the author of this site has no problem.
Going to app.plex.tv on the iPad simply sends the audio out the iPad. Running Teamviewer on the iPad does send the audio out of the computer instead of the iPad but then I’m trying to read a page set for a 34" monitor on a 10" iPad.
Using the HTPC app means I’d have to buy a remote control.
You cannot select the web browser. It doesn’t support being remote controlled.
Only Plex HTPC and Plexamp can be remote controlled on Windows.
No, it doesn’t. Try the cursor keys, space bar, Enter and Esc.
I see. If the Plex server were running on a Mac then I’d be able to do what the site shows? Since my Plex server is running on Windows, I’m out of luck. Fair enough. It’s no big deal. I was just wondering why I wasn’t able to do it.
I think I’m just better off using Teamviewer as I have been. Thanks for the help, though.
What do you mean by that?
I’m using Plex on Windows, so I know what works there and what doesn’t.
The inability to remote control the web app has nothing to do with the hardware platform.
The web app cannot be remote controlled – no matter which browser or machine it is running in.
Nope. That is an old article and that feature is no longer possible. Please note that you are not controlling your server. The Plex app running in the browser is a client. It is also used to manage your server, but it is a client. The feature in that article is called Companion and the Web client no longer allows being controlled through Companion. The Web client does not support Airplay or bluetooth, so those are not options either. If your server was a Mac, your iPad can connect to it through Airplay and send the audio and video directly to the OS. It does not go through a Plex client.
Ok. I’m not complaining that it can’t be done. Just wondering what I was doing wrong. I may try installing the HTPC app but I suspect I would lose grid view and I can’t stand swiping left/right to make selections.
What if I added a bluetooth card to the computer? Would that work?
To be clear, when using your iPad, you are not actually controlling the HTPC app. You do all the selection and stuff from your iPad. The difference is when you hit play, instead of playing on the iPad, it plays on the player you are connected to. As you go through the app on your iPad, some of the screens on the HTPC app may change to match what you are looking at, but everything is still done on the iPad app.
What if I added a bluetooth card to the computer? Would that work?
Not for what you want. You may be able to connect your iPad through Bluetooth and use your computer speakers, but that’s it.
I installed the HTPC app and it does exactly what I wanted.
Well, almost. I can’t control the volume through the iPad. Oh well. I don’t have an audio system with a remote. My receiver is a 1977 Marantz.
Ah, yes, they removed the Plex-for-Windows app to be “controlled” by the mobile apps about a year ago. I complained at the time.
I wish Plex would create a real manual for the system. Searching forum posts is tedious even if you find the answer.
