I also have 2 Sony 2012 TV… upgraded each version and seem to roll back to 1.1.4 again…
Wife has asked me to look for an alternative, as it is hitting the “to unreliable to use” a bit sad as other have mentioned this has been going for a long time…
@hvolks - I know what you are talking about, have the same issue at home.
It is hard to beleive the a software like Plex is not able to handle the very basic DLNA protocol. In any way, throwing out two “old” TVs cannot be a solution.
Have the same issue, can’t connect to the DLNA service. Can’t believe that this is not fixed for months.

@sa2000 : thank you for continued assistance. Do you happen to know what’s the current state of affairs regarding this problem?
I have no update to give you. It has been registered. DLNA is not core functionality and furthermore the impact is only to a subset of DLNA users - Sony TV and BluRay users with models pre 2014 (I believe), so it is not at the top of the priority list and I am passing all the feedback to the development team
definitely not just Sony pre 2014.
I have a Samsung UN46F7500 with the same problem.
Since this response, i did good not buying anything from plex. My miniDLNA on my router can play 1080BDRIP without a drop o sweat. Guess i going to use it in my NAS too.
A try using plex again next year. I think its not going to be solved in this one.

There is no real good reason for you to use DLNA on a Samsung. There is an excellent app from orca for models up to 2015 and there is the official Plex Smart TVs app for 2016 models onwards
Version 1.4.2 is still broken. This is beyond unacceptable.
And newsflash: 1.3.4 seems to work! What in the world? Are there bugs being fixed behind the scenes without actual recognition of what’s going on?
Since we plebs don’t have access to the bug tracker, I can only imagine it’s this bug that solved it:
(DLNA) Crash browsing to certain photo library sections. (#5874)
Unfortunately, the fix clearly didn’t precipitate to 1.4.x series, considering that 1.4.2 came out after 1.3.4.
So, what’s going on?
And of course, it was going to be too good to be true. Version 1.3.4 plays as long as you don’t attempt to fast forward. Something similar to what 1.4.0 was showing.
Seriously, why is this process so painful?

There must be a number of different causes for failures that are being reported in this forum thread.
In these earlier posts there were confirmations that 1.3.4 did not fix the problem

I would still recommend looking into one of the streaming devices to attach to TVs that do not have a Plex app. I use a roku even when my smart TV does have an app available. For countries where a roku is available, I believe a Roku 3 is the best option to go for - my personal view. Where it is not available, Apple TV would be good choice but would be more expensive,
I personally went for a roku when it was clear that the release cycle for new versions of the native app for the TV was too long.

I’ve spent plenty of money for additional devices to provide playback from Plex. Each and every one of them has problems, as outlined earlier in the thread.
I am not going to entertain the idea of spending more money to solve a regression bug in a software I paid for.
Respectfully, this is not a solution, it’s a poor workaround. Given the history, it’s also not a guarantee that plex will properly support a given device in a next release, and ignore the problem.
Judging by the comments from staff, the Plex team seems unwilling to continue future development and support for DLNA. The conveyed “solution” is to purchase new or supplemental hardware which requires use of the proprietary Plex application. I agree with the opposing opinion that this is both unwarranted and a poor solution.
Despite the dissolution of The Digital Living Networking Alliance (“DLNA”) organization, the DLNA standard isn’t going away any time soon. DLNA guidelines will no longer be updated but DNLA certification is still being granted by SpireSpark International, an organization founded by former DLNA executives. Also, certification is now open to all companies and no longer restricted to members.
Per the former chairman and president of DLNA, Stephen Palm, there have been “nearly 4 billion units certified across more than 25,000 device models during the past 13 years”. This is no small number. Until a successor to DLNA can be widely adopted, DLNA is not yet obsolete!
Many of us would prefer to use a single solution for our media streaming needs. Due to the lack of commitment for continued DLNA support I fear that now is the time to find an alternative. I’ve used Plex for a number of years and paid for the Android and iOS apps. I’m glad that I didn’t purchase a lifetime pass, like I’d originally planned, because then I’d have to deal with the burden of requesting a refund.
Here are some alternative DLNA servers with transcoding support. I’ve not had a chance to test any of these yet so I’d be interested in your experiences.
Universal Media Server
Emby Server
Serviio Media Streaming Server
JRiver Media Center
Mezzmo
TVersity Media Server
MediaTomb
Thanks Plex, it was great while it lasted.
I think it is about time for PLEX to update its own website. Certainly the information given here is not true anymore as it only works on selected devices and not on all devices as suggested:
It is very sad the PLEX causes so many problems for such a long time on such a basic issue like DLNA access.
We’re are investigating the reported DLNA issues with Sony devices, but we don’t have any specific details to share.
We believe that Plex is best experienced when using an official Plex app, so for those of you experiencing issues, we encourage you to use one of our official Plex apps (Chromecast, Roku, Amazon Fire TV, Apple TV, Android TV, many game consoles, etc.) in the meantime.

Thank you for responding. So far the lack of official reply has been disappointing, to say the least.
Many of us, myself included, have offered to provide any kind of assistance that would be useful in fixing this issue. I’d still like to extend this offer, whether it means providing detailed logs, testing, or anything else. I feel very strongly about having to deal with a regression bug that’s been present not only for so long, but completely ignored.
From the behavior of 1.3.x and 1.4.x branches, we also see different issues with playback, so clearly codebases differ. I’m not sure what we can expect moving forward, as 1.3.x seems to have fixed parts of it, in comparison to 1.2.x, while 1.4.x is more broken.

I would like to point out that this is a disingenuous advice, as most of those platforms have other sets of issues that continue to linger. Plex on chromecast doesn’t support 5.1 audio and downgrades it to 2.0. Amazon fire tv stick 1 had problems for many months, with complete lack of audio playback on DTS media. Amazon fire tv stick 2 has audio drop out issues. None of those platforms provide ability to run a specific version of the player, and we are forced to deal with new bugs as new releases roll out.
This list could go on, and has been rehashed in this thread before. DLNA, even with less features, for years has delivered a guaranteed playback on this equipment. Expecting paid customers to buy additional equipment in lieu of fixing a regression bug is not what I would expect from Plex.
Regards,
Agree 100% with ananke. I have 2 Sony TV in the house that this is an issue with at the moment. Asking us to buy additional equipment to fix something that shouldn’t need to be fixed is a joke.
I am willing to help in any way possible to help fix this. Until then I’m stuck on an old version of the server which limits what I can do with it.
@ananke thank you for this thread. I received the notification to update and came checking to see if the DLNA issue had been resolved. To see that it is still a problem is a little disappointing.
Just in case if there’s a question about what the problems with amazon fire tv is:
Another bug that’s been plaguing plex for a year now. Yet another platform that seems to be abandoned. Further indicating lack of commitment to existing systems, only targeting flavor of the month.
Great, now 1.1.4 is broken with today’s Windows Update patch (on Windows 10 anyway). Anyone else have this issue today with 1.1.4? There is a separate thread for it: https://forums.plex.tv/discussion/263244/problem-with-windows-update-4013429-on-windows-10
It crashes as soon as it is launched. The logs don’t say much aside from that it is firing off the crash uploader.
If updating to the current version is required, I am forced to choose between running the new (broken) Plex, or running old Windows. I hope someone can find a solution that allows old Plex to run on current Windows.
I don’t understand why this dlna issue is not fixed. Every place I worked if you rolled software that broke something that previously worked, you had to fix it immediately. Longer you wait, longer it takes to isolate the change that broke it.
I rolled back even further, to version 0.9.16.6.1993 (the latest pre-1.0 version that I have on file). I didn’t try a lot of different versions, I just picked this one “out of a hat” so to speak. This one works with the latest Windows Update patch and it works with my Sony Blu-ray player’s DLNA.
So I’ll stick here for a while. sigh
