Buffering Issues on Nvidia Shield TV Pro for High Bitrate 4k files

Correct, i can only assume that the Kodi player is a bit more robust than the Plex one. I think it was the threat protection service that caused the problem. Since i switched that off i have had zero issues…

That is very odd. I am not aware of any such service on my end since I am using Unraid with Plex in a docker container. Hopefully something can still be done.

Is there anything else we can do to help this? I am willing to troubleshoot and provide more logs under different tests if that is helpful.

Also having the same problem with some files, Top Gun Maverick remux being one of them… Linuxserver’s version of Plex on Unraid.

Exact same issue here. Files don’t buffer in jellyfin but buffer constantly in Plex on Android TV.

Played fine for the first 52 minutes and then constant buffering even after restarts.

Stop PLEX, delete the codec folder in the appdata folder, start PLEX again!

Enjoy the movie

This just started happening to me last week

That’s not the solution, it’s not a transcoding issue

Did you try it? Codecs aren’t just there for transcoding… My problem was a TrueHD decoding issue.

I just tried this as well and no luck, same buffers in the same places as always.

I also did a full disk defrag and rebalance (which together took over a week) and still nothing. I am running out of ideas so if anyone has anything, I would love to try it and see.

Any updates on this issue? It is still present for the Plex app and VLC still does not have this issue. Did anyone explore the Kodi route with any success?

I did notice that on the regions where the Plex app struggles, VLC is getting an input bitrate of upwards of 130Mb/s (sometimes even up to 150Mb/s) and demux bitrate of around 100Mb/s but obviously varies with the input and generally stays 10-20Mb/s lower than the input bitrate.

I can force the system into a buffering state and when that happens the demux rate is larger than the input rate. Not sure if any of these observations are helpful for Plex troubleshooting though since again this is all with VLC for Android 3.5.4 Beta 2.

Is there maybe a way to change the player Plex uses from ExoPlayer to libVLC?

I caved and tried Emby instead booting up their docker container, turning on hardware transcoding (not that it matters since it is also a direct play over there) just so that everything was the same as the Plex container and the same place that always buffers on Plex (final scene of 13 Hours) and is fine in VLC, to my surprise also had no issue on Emby which is also using Exoplayer on my shield. This puts the nail in the coffin that it is a Plex server or Plex client issue right?

Am I still alone on this issue? It is still present for me, and I am at a loss. I may just have to abandon Plex altogether for Emby, but it seems very odd to me that I am the only one having this issue.

I started running into similar issues with some high bitrate 4K content on Plex (using FireTV 4K and 4K MAX devices). Also have been starting to see issues with navigating my fairly large library (1000+ movies) - mainly slow scrolling, starting movies, etc.

Anyways, decided to give Emby a try and had the same experience - much better performance, no buffering, scrolling through my library much faster, etc.

I think performance is kinda low on Plex’s list right now due to spending time on all the integration with streaming services.

six asked for a sample file with the area in it that causes the issues so he could test. did you provide that to him. my issue was fixed with mkvtoolnix.

I may have found something worth trying. When I was messing around with Jellyfin, I was getting odd results where sometimes files would load and other times the exact same file would not after a docker container restart. So I looked into the logs and it was yelling about the transcode directory having a permission denied error (I have it transcoding to /tmp on Unraid). So I just rm -rf /tmp/* and then restarted the Jellyfin container and it is flawless now. I have yet to try another container restart of Jellyfin to see if the issue is reproducible though.

The reason I say all of this is because my Plex transcodes are also going to /tmp, so maybe it is something similar? So far, my initial testing has been positive but not flawless. I will have to use it more to tell and reboot the container/server/etc.

As an aside, Jellyfin is a pretty promising alternative, though I would switch back to Plex if this issue is actually fixed because it handles DTS audio better, I already paid for lifetime Plex pass, has better collections, is prettier, and more user friendly.

I also suffer the same problem, problems with loading buffer in BDremux movies with high bitrate level. But I also have my Emby server on and the difference is that with Emby free I don’t have the slightest problem with high bitrate movies at all, with Emby all BDremux 4k HDR play smoothly without any buffering problem. So I still have to use Emby to play high bitrate movies.

Did you try my transcoding directory clear “solution” shown above? I have had pretty good luck, although you can’t really prove a negative.

@Cjkeenan I was not testing that solution. I just joined the forum today and couldn’t read all the posts. Is it easy to implement this solution that you mention?
