Plex constantly buffers with most 4k movies

Have a nvidia shield pro … Can watch all movies on the plex app apart from most 4k movies. Constant buffering if I try to watch them in 4k. Yet I can watch them on the Shield pro on most other apps other than Plex :frowning:

First off, don’t post the logs directly in the thread instead upload the log file.

It would also help to know how you have your equipment connect. Like is your shield connected to your network vie cable or wireless, where is your media stored, on your computer or a NAS, Is computer wired or wireless…

As per Alucard1’s response… that snippet on its own isn’t helping much.
If you need to transcode those videos, make sure your server is actually using the GTX 1070. While the CPU also has Intel Quick Sync support, it’s an early generation that was still delivering pretty poor results (I believe this only significantly improved from Kaby Lake onwards).

HW accelerated streaming will not handle burning in your subtitles into the video stream. This still requires the CPU – and here again… while your CPU has lots of power, it’s not going to be enough for a 4K transcode.

As for what is causing your file to be transcoded (unless you actively opted to stream a lower/different quality version) – check out the “now playing” tile for that playback on the Plex server dashboard…

apologies I thought by saying what my windows servers stats were that would make it clear where my media files were stored :frowning:

Server is a windows server with the above stats
Shield is connected via cable
My server holds all the files on 6tb hdds
Server is connected to the network via cable also

According to the logs your Plex Media Server is using the GTX 1070 – the file has no subtitles, so there’s no issue with burning those into the video.
From the logs, the server is perfectly capable to transcode that video in real-time. However that video stream seems to average around 80 Mbps… which brings us back to the question of how your Shield is connected to that PC. It’s good to know both the server and the Shield are using a wired connection – however that says little about the performance / load of that network…

thanks for looking into this for me mate :slight_smile: A question though, if it was the network causing the issue wouldnt VLC running the same 4k movie buffer also?

yeah mate everything is exacty the same apart from using VLC to watch it over PLEX
