Buffering issues with plex connect/ pms

greetings everyone and thanks for this amazing tool that is plex connect

since i've installed it I'm noticing this issues on my configuration:

atv: 3 updaded to latest apple firmware

dns server of atv : 10.0.0.47

local ip address of the device on which plex connect is installed: 10.0.0.47

issue:  the problem is that when i start to play a media on plexconnect, a media that is being transcoded, after a random time like 10 min or 20 or 30, the streaming stops on my atv and in order to resume it and i have to quit that streaming on my atv and reload it( resuming from last point) then it keeps going on for an other random time and then it happens again.
I checked my plex media server logs and it appears that the parameter speed when i start streaming a media that is being transcoded, is high like 3,4 then the time passes and the speeed slowly drops to 2 1 then it starts 0,9 0,8 0,7 then 0,0 and the streaming stops.
i tried a lot of things to fix this:
-reinstalled plexconnect
-i put my laptop ( i'm running plexconnect and pms on my fast  i7 laptop and on wifi, it's a strong 2,4 signals) wired just to try
- i played with all the settings in PMS and in plex connect

I have no problems streaming the same files to all my apple devices with the plex app ( ios and ipad) and to my tv with chromecast.

I'm sure  i need to give you more details, just it's so many things to tell i'm not sure what i should add.
an other important thing is that my cpu NEVER is on high load, when i start a streaming it loads at most 30%; apple tv is connected to my router with a cable too.
It seems like my cpu gets lazy and slowly stops working as long as the time passes and then i need to wake her up resuming the streaming when it pauses

any clue what it could be?

thanks in advance for any kind of help you might give me and happy new year too =)

Log file?

What’s the cpu doing when you have issues?

Was wired to the aTV and laptop any better?

you want me to copy and paste the log file of plexmedia server?

when i have issues the cpu is simply sleeping down to 0, it's not busy at all

no when i plugged my laptop to my router it wasn't any better, my atv is always plugged into my router wired

I also suffer from this issue!, All other devices stream perfectly, tablets, ipads and PHT. My folks also have this issue and as stated, have to exit the library and go back in to continue. I thought it was network so have quality right down to 1080 8mbps. Same issue, even on SD movies.

I am wondering if its the ATV, as the server isnt loaded and i have a wired network. This didnt always happen, just started getting worse over the last 6 mths.

does it happen only with transcoded files right? not sure about this, tomorrow i will try with a native file that doesn't get transcoded

look at a part from my pms logs when the file stops streaming

I imagine it is the transcoding, As I said it didnt always do it, perhaps the updated transcoder has some bugs, but i havent bothered yet to check logs. It is definiately just with the Plexconnect and ATV3. I havent updated my ATV3 since purchase as when I did the first time, I not longer got a display output on my TV, but thats another story!

VC-1 codec for video ?

VC-1 codec for video ?

how to check this?

https://support.plex.tv/hc/en-us/articles/201018517-Media-Info

There is a known problem with PMS transcoder when converting VC-1 videos to 1080p/H.264 and this may explain why your problem appears with the ATV3 and not with other devices.

http://gyazo.com/8cacc11a2b8612d61b28ecbe682c6d02

does this help to understand?

That file is coded H.264 level 4.1, ATV3 supports H.264 level 4.0, I think that PMS should be able to transcode without problems. I have no more ideas, maybe others have...

I'm not sure if my issue is the same but I have found that recently (i.e. within the past couple of weeks) I've started having problems playing back videos on my ATV2.

I've just updated to the latest OpenPlex and PlexConnect (updated at 23:20 today) so I'm going to see if that fixes the problem so fingers crossed. What I have been experiencing is playback just stops midway through a movie/tv show. I can then exit back to the menu but if I retry I just get the waiting animation (spinning wheel) and nothing happens. I then can't go back into the app (iMovie in this case) until I restart my ATV. After which I can playback fine.

no in my case i just have to go back to movie menu and re-enter and streaming is fine, it all takes like 5 seconds total

Update: on plexxconnect settings I set transcode quality to 720 4mb and the issue doesn’t happen, seems the Transcoding speed never has issues with this. I’ll keep doing my tries with diff settings. Could any developer enlighten me on what the problem could be? Please :frowning:

I retried on 1080p, nothing the issue keeps happening. When I stream a 1080p file with 720p transcode setting on plexxconnect, is it that bad? For the quality I mean? My eye is not experienced I tried to do a comparison but couldn’t really notice a difference on my 40 tv. I could leave it on this 720p 4mb setting with no issues or go back to 1080p and resume the playback every 30-40 min wyhen the buffer stops

Inviato dal mio iPhone utilizzando Tapatalk

For a 40" TV, you have to sit closer than 8ft from the screen to tell a difference between 720p and 1080p resolutions.

http://www.digitaltrends.com/home-theater/720p-vs-1080p-can-you-tell-the-difference-between-hdtv-resolutions/

But is it really that difference? I mean the original file is 1080p it’s just the transcode rate that is set at 720p… I keep watching the movie and I can’t see a difference

Update, updated to Plexconnect 0.5 and while I have only watched TV shows, it appears to be working well with the PMS at version 0.9.11.5.7744.

Will check with some 1080 movies, however i was getting freezing even on lower quality media.

I’ve actually been getting both issues mentioned here. I’ve found at about the 90 min mark of movies I get the buffering and the only way to start it again is to leave the show and resume again. This has happened a few times now.

Tonight I had a separate issue where a show stopped midway and then I couldn’t get it to start again on that Apple TV. All other shows worked and that episode worked on all other devices (iPhones, iPads, and my other AppleTV). I haven’t checked the logs yet but will tonight

Since i changed that setting in plex connect the issue is gone ,; nz what version of pms is that ? Mine is past 2.x
