Buffering on direct play, smooth playback when transcoding

Hi all,

For a few days now I have been having buffering issues with direct playback. At first I thought it was because of a file with a bitrate higher than my network could handle (1gbit) but it started happening on 5mb/s files.

When I transcode it doesn’t buffer.

I thought about maybe the network not being able to handle it but there is nothing else on it and no cables are damaged or anything because when I download a file to the server it can easily do that at my max download speed (200mbits/s).

All the basic trouble shooting tells me to check network capacity and transcoding ability but neither of those seem to apply here.

I am streaming from a ryzen 3 3100, gtx 1650, unraid setup with 32gb of ram to a 65" LG C3. I tried both via wifi and ethernet.

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance!

I have a similar issue. I’m at a loss at what to do. I have m4 mac mini and (3) 4k apple tvs using the plex app. Direct play results in constant buffering, causing me to have to transcode everything. Once I transcode, the issue is gone.

I too started having this problem.

@ChuckPa, any ideas?

I am having the exact same issue.

mini M4 Pro server connected to latest gen AppleTV 4k w/ ethernet (1G connection). The issue doesnt start until after 15-20min of watching sometimes. I can see my server bandwidth jump to 900mbps+ so I know it’s pulling data fast enough. And the issue happens on Plex and Infuse player. So far it’s only been happening on 4k content (SDR/HDR/DV, doesn’t matter).

I am running the latest software on every device (macOS, Plex server, AppleTV). It’s extremely frustrating and I’ve yet to find a fix or the root cause. HELP!

Also getting this in the last couple of weeks. Running latest PMS from unraid to an LG C4. No network issues and direct play.

Okay so as of a few weeks ago this problem no longer occurs for me. I did not find the cause (i have a suspicion) of the issue or a specific solution but this is what I did to solve the issue.

I first of all decided to turn off all my dockers including plex.
I ran an update for all my dockers including plex (there was a plex update available)
I deleted and reinstalled the plex app on LG C3
I turned off my unraid server for the night
In the morning I booted up my server and my plex docker and connected my TV app again.

My suspicion is that it either has something to do with bandwidth allocation on my unraid server (I was running deluge as well even though it was only seeding at 200kb) or my network switch was doing something strange that I have no idea about or that it might be something that starts happening if you try to play video files that exceed the max bitrate of the LG C3 (50 or 60mbps) because I distinctly remembering doing that leading up to having these issues. Sometimes those files would play though (without issue). Why that would have an effect down the line on playing other files that are much lower bitrate I don’t know but it could have something to do with it.

Luckily for me the problem has “resolved itself”. I hope it stays this way. And ever since becoming aware of the max bitrate of the LG C3 I have started reconsidering the quality profiles I maintain for my media.
