Buffering problems when using VOB subs

First off: I’m new here and not very technically inclined. But my question is pretty simple. I’m using a Synology NAS to stream videos to my Samsung smart TV and I’ve noticed that MKV video files will play perfectly as long as I don’t use VOB subtitles. When I do, the files keep buffering without end. I don’t seem to have this problem when I use SRT subtitles.

Sorry if this question has been asked before on this forum. I just wanted to check if this is a known problem? If so, of course, all I have to do is find some srt files and use those.

SRT subtitles are just text so the app is able to play these without much effort. VOB are graphics and the app cannot play these. So your server has to combine this with the video, this process is called burning in, which is very taxing on your server. Your NAS might not have the power to handle this.

To add to MovieFan,

Synology NAS systems are infamously known for their inability to burn-in subtitles.
It’s a great NAS, which can access the transcoding hardware in the chip, but does not have much horsepower unless you own one of the Xeon-class systems. Their Xeon-based systems, while having good CPU power, don’ t have the transcoding hardware support so there is always something missing with Synology.

Thanks to both of you. Synology may have its limitations, but then so does my budget, and apart from this glitch it’s been doing quite well. Adding SRT files it is then!
