[BUG] Automatic subtitle selection isn’t working since last update

Server Version#: 1.16.4.1469-6d5612c2f
Player Version#: Chrome Browser

Ever since I installed this latest update, the automatic subtitle selection is not working. I have the following global settings set in my account and this matches the Plex settings on my server as well.

There are no subtitles in there and only one audio track.
I don’t see what Plex shall activate automatically here?

My apologies, that one has burned in subs. Here is one not selecting automatically but has english subs and japanese audio

Since you preferred japanese audio in your profile, Plex will not treat it as “foreign”.
Therefore the subs won’t get activated.

If you had preferred English audio, the subs would get activated, since there is no English audio in the file.

Is this a new way plex interprets this? It used to work just fine as I have it set.

It is working according to specification.

There was a fix recently to correct a behaviour which was not following the spec above.
You might have learned to rely on the faulty behaviour.

I think you may be right. I was used to having japanese set as the preferred audio track and auto selecting english subs for anime files that have multiple languages (english dubs, japanese audio + subs)

Thank you for your help and clearing this up.

Why has this behaviour been removed without an adequate fallback, since it is still impossible to mark a whole series with a preferred audio/subtitle set?

There is now no way short of manually selecting the tracks for each episode to achieve the desired outcome of English audio/no subs for any shows without Japanese audio.
