My music library used to be awesome, but something in plex changed and some years ago I rebuilt my music library and some of the Albums split into many albums of a single track each!
I was hoping it would get fixed over time, and avoided using plex for my music but tested just now and it hasn’t been fixed so figure I will say something now thanks.,
That looks like a compilation. If so, the Album Artist tag for each track needs to be set identically (Various Artists). The Artist tag for each track can (and should) reflect the actual artist.
Right now it looks like you have the Album Artist for each track set differently (to the actual artist for each track). This could cause the behavior you’re seeing if you have your library configured to prefer local metadata.
Yah I looked and seems like the “Album Artist” field is blank so it is using the Artist field I guess.
Thing is, I am sorting by Album - Title so there is no need for it to split like this, it should show me every Album and the title of that album… and this is what it used to do, now it has regressed to this business.
If I have to go and write new ID3 tag for every single various artists album it will be big chore what a shame.
Plex identifies an album based on its title and the album artist. Imagine, all your Greatest Hits albums from different artists being thrown into a single album because they share the same album title.
Each folder should be a disc, It should simply show the Album title (from the Album feild), the album art (scraped or in my case folder.jpg) for each disc (folder). The artist is irrelevant when you are sorting by Album and Title. If I am sorting for Album by Artist ok, but not Album by title.
If I have 20 “Greatest hits” albums all named this, that’s on me and I will distinguish by the cover art anyway.
^ This is how it used to be, at some point it regressed. But there is no reason to deviate from 1 folder = 1 disc.
Surely you can see it is not a sensible proposition to split each song into its own album? This is very clearly a bug, 1 folder = 1 disc, this is how it was, and how it should be.
I’m not sure it ever was this way.
This will probably work if you rely on the online metadata, but once you start using embedded metadata, a „release“ (album, …) is established by the same album title and album artist (unless the given album contains only tracks with a single/unique artist).
There’s a lot of apps that’ll help with manually tagging files which also offer some automation to obtain/set and data or to bulk-change specific attributes to many files. You might want to check out mp3tag or MusicBrainz Picard app.
It was, it used to show me an album per folder not an album per song like this, it changed at some point years ago (after I had to rebuild my library), I figured it was a bug that would get fixed so i said nothing but yea saw that it remains so decided to say something.
Anyway I will look at the tools to label all these compilation albums as 'Various Artists" in the album artist field and see if it fixes it.
