Several times I have recorded movie content and added it to my collection, on a NAS with Plex Media Server to manage it. And in certain instances, PMS matches the movie under the wrong title–specifically the original title, not the release title. This happens whenever any given movie has an original title and a different release title. Examples:
- Quatermass and the Pit ultimately released as Five Million Years to Earth. But when I recorded it and moved it into my server, PMS listed it as Quatermass and the Pit.
- Perfect Strangers (1945) ultimately released under the title Vacation from Marriage. PMS indexed it under the title Perfect Strangers.
A word about that latter titie. Months after I captured it, Vacation from Marriage showed up for streaming again. I looked for it on my server and couldn’t find it. So I recaptured it (having forgotten I already had it!) and went to save it to my server. Imagine my annoyance when I received the message, "Such-a-directory already has a file named Vacation from Marriage (1945).tx. What do you want to do? Replace? Skip? Keep both?
So I said “Skip.” Then I had to go to the IMDb and search for Vacation from Marriage there. I found it, and the original title. So I searched my server for Perfect Strangers and I found it.
Now of course it’s a very simple matter to edit the listing to change the title (and sort title) to Vacation from Marriage and then add Perfect Strangers to the Original Title field. That way, I can search under either title and still find it.
But why didn’t PMS list the movie properly to begin with? Why do I have to retitle a film every time I save one that has a different original title? Isn’t PMS supposed to figure that out?
