Plex Matching Original Title from IMDB instead of placing it in the original title field

Server Version#: 1.14.1.5488
Player Version#: 3.83.1

I’m not sure if this is just happening to me or everyone, but I would think someone would have brought this up before if it was everyone.

When I add a new movie to my Movie folder, Plex scans it, adds it and detects what it believes to be the name of the movie based on the file name and year and then tries to match it from IMDB (as it should).

However, if IMDB has an “original title” set on that specific movie, Plex changes the name on the movie to the original title rather than placing the original title in the original title field as would be expected since the field is named that and should be used for that.

Instead, the original title field is left blank and the Title and Sort Title get changed to the original name of the movie while the poster shows the same name as the file name.

This seems a little counter-intuitive. Is there a setting I am missing or have set wrong for Plex to force the original title into the Title and Sort Title fields instead of placing it in the Original Title field and leaving the Title and Sort Title to be the same as what shows on IMDB ?

An example of this is a movie called “The Quest” (1986). It has an original title of Frog Dreaming.

The file name I have is The Quest 1986 720p.mkv

Plex scans and adds it and the name shows as “The Quest” and then matches it via IMDB and proceeds to change the Title and Sort Title fields to “Frog Dreaming” and leaves the original title field blank. And then proceeds to add the poster that shows “The Quest” which means the name and poster don’t show the same name which can be confusing for my family.

I also checked my settings for IMDB for matching movies and I have the box checked for localized titles which should tell Plex to use the name shown for my country within IMDB. And if you check that entry on IMDB, the name for Canada shows “The Quest”.

Why is Plex changing it and dropping the use of the Original Title field? I have to constantly go in and change the fields so they are set correctly when I add a new movie that has this set on IMDB.

Any ideas?

Plex usually uses TheMovieDb.org to collect most of its metadata – there, the movie in question is listed as Frog Dreaming for both the US and Canada. As the title matches the original title, Plex will keep that field empty.

PS: try to put the year in the file name in brackets and any technical information in square brackets to prevent Plex from getting the hiccups! (e.g. The Quest (1986) [720p].mkv)

I was under the impression that Plex matched and collected metadata based on which agent was set as first for the specified library.

As well, under Agents > Movies > Plex Movies, Plex Movie is set first under additional agents. And under the settings for Plex Movie, I have everything set to pull from IMDB (Cast, ratings, plot, etc). The presumption would be that it would collect the metadata from Plex Movie (which I was under the impression was IMDB) before it would look at The Movie Database.

How does Plex determine which agent it will use or which site it will pull metadata from (Plex Movie or The Movie Database) when a file is added to a library that is configured for Movies?

The Plex Movie agent is using a wide range of sources and is also more flexible compared to the pure The Movie Database agent (e.g. as you pointed out you can pick certain information to be derived from alternative sources such as IMDb or TheMovieDb / IMDb or Rotten Tomatoes etc).

If you look at the bottom of the advanced library settings, you will notice it is the exact same options also used for the pure The Movie Database agent (e.g. Use collection info from The Movie Database).
