[Bug]: Plexamp poor quality bluetooth audio on launch (macOS Big Sur)

Am able to reproduce the “set to 44.1 kHz” — will investigate.

(I have found that once the system is in the state with poor Bluetooth audio, even when quitting Plexamp or another app, you can reset things by killing the coreaudiod process )

thanks for the tip, it worked perfectly. I really hope Plex keep supporting Plexamp… i love it personally. 90% of the time I’m using plex for audio over video.

Yep, killing coreaudiod does kick it back into gear for me (i9 Macbook Pro with Sony WH1000-MX2 Bluetooth headphones).

Hopefully it’s an easy-ish fix for the future so we don’t have to kill processes.

I discovered another way to change the sample rate of the headphones without having to kill the coreaudiod process.

Depending on your workflow killing the process might actually be faster, but it’s still good to know:

In the ‘Audio MIDI Setup’ app you can change the sample rate of the audio device in use to anything that it supports. Here’s what it looks like right after Plexamp changed the headphones to 16000Hz:

So we need to put it back to 48000Hz:

Another solution would be to use a third party app that allow you to easily see and adjust these settings without having to dig through the ‘Audio MIDI Setup’ app. I’m using Rogue Amoeba’s SoundSource. It goes into the menu bar and makes all these settings easily available. Here’s what it looks like when Plexamp changed the headphones to 16000Hz:

So we need to put it back to 48000Hz:

I’m really looking forward to have this bug fixed in Plexamp, though.

I have the same problem with Mac OS 11.5 and Audio Technica ATH-S200BT. Have you made any progress @elan? I’m willing to test builds if necessary

Should be fixed in the next release.

I have noticed incredibly poor audio quality from PlexAmp when using airplay to the appletv. The bizarre thing is that if I switch to the iOS Plex app and play the exact same music, it sounds just fine. This feels related, but also different, to the rest of the issues being addressed here.

Same exact issue MacBook Pro and MacBook Air M1 both have this when PlexAmp is used with AirPods Pro. The quality degradation is severe.

No problems however with PlexAmp on iPhone with AirPods Pro.

I have the same exact issue as described in the original post, though using some Bose headphones (with a mic).

Tested just today using Plexamp 3.5.0 on macOS 11.5.2

This bug seems to be fixed for me with Plexamp 3.7.0
