PlexAmp Audio Quality Poor on iOS (if you start playing while on a phone call)

I was testing out PlexAmp on iOS and I like it so far. However, the audio quality is very poor. I’m on WiFi locally connected to my Plex server. I made sure that audio quality was set to maximum on both WiFi and Cellular but I’m still getting a much lower quality stream on PlexAmp than I do with Plex for iOS.

Any ideas?

What version of Plex server and Windows OS are you running? And what version of iOS are you on?

I’m running Plex on QTS (QNAP).

Plex Version: 1.19.1.2645
Plexamp: 3.0.0

I ended up force quitting the app and it seems to be streaming properly now. Perhaps the new settings won’t take on a fresh install?

The magic reboot… it even works on a NAS! Good to know. Thanks for the update.

I know…right?

Just to be clear, I force quit the iOS App on my phone, not the Plex Server.

Oh… gotcha. I also found that if I haven’t rebooted my iPhone in a while, that will also mess things up. I’m so glad it’s working for you. Enjoy

I figured out how to replicate this bug. If you start playing audio while on call it stays low quality until you end the call and force quit and restart the app.

Good to know. I’ll try to reproduce and pass it on to the devs. Thanks.

So, are you using BT headphones when this is happening? Just seeing if we can reproduce.

Yeah, I’m using BeatsX.

the simple solution is either start playing audio before the call, or after.

No, that’s a workaround.

Could you try to reproduce this without using BT headphones? We have a theory it could be an issue with BT. Thanks, @wingcomm

I can’t seem to reproduce it on the phone when my headphones are disconnected.

That’s a good data point. I will relay this the devs. Thanks for testing!

We’re just curious. Can you try to reproduce the same poor audio quality using the same steps with other music application (Apple Music, TIDAL, Spotify, etc.)? We think it’s a low level BT system issue and this would help flush this out. Thank you.

I tested a few other music apps and they are not affected. Curiously, Plex for iOS has the same bug.

@alexanderjunk Were you able to confirm this issue?

There is someone working on some BT stack issues which should resolve this problem. Sorry for the delayed response. Have a good one.

@alexanderjunk Not a problem I appreciate the feedback. Just wanted to make sure that this got acknowledged. :+1:
