Bug: Plexamp Windows Doesn't find devices

Hi,

Thanks for adding chromecast support. But for some reason, it can’t find my devices while everything else on my network can see all my chromecasts. It this picture, you can see Chrome sees several devices when Plexamp just sees This device. Anyone has any suggestion on how to fix this?

Is Plexamp running on a desktop computer or on an Android phone?
If it is the former, it is a restriction imposed by Google. They only allow Android devices and the Chrome web browser to use Chromecast devices.

I have it both on my Android device and Desktop.

on my Android device, it sees all devices without any issue.

on my desktop (Windows), it doesn’t see any of the devices. the picture was a screenshot of Chrome and Plexamp running side by side.

So if this is the Google restriction, what is the point of having casting capability on Plexamp Windows?

It can cast to Sonos from desktop.

I wonder how Google Play Music Desktop Player manages it?

Oh I see.

It looks like he’s using his own library:

It’s poorly documented, and seemingly unmaintained (no updates since 2017).

It’s also unofficial. I think Plex would prefer to do things the right way, following supported and official Google Chromecast guidelines.

The Spotify desktop application recently added the ability to cast to Chromecast devices. I would assume this means that there is now an official API for desktop applications to cast as well.

I can second this annoying bug. Plexamp on Windows 10 64 bit only sees itself as a casting device, while chrome or other casting apps on the same computer can see 11 other players on network. Please fix ASAP…

Just posting to mention that you’re using the official google chromecast icon on the windows desktop app; I appreciate that you’re reusing react code and designs cross-platform, but this is really confusing, and a bit frustrating that it took me an hour of debugging and searching the internet to realize i can’t listen to my music on my speakers at home.

Anyway, thanks again, i appreciate you all a ton, and love your work, just sharing that i think this is worth putting some more effort into resolving (a la spotify), even if it’s not thru an official google integration.

So complete waste of time then if I want to cast to my Sony Receiver (Chromecast device) via Windows 10?

Hopping in to point out how annoying this is. I am using Plexamp for Linux and can only cast to my Chrome browser, but on my Android I can cast to any device on my network. I would love to be able to control playback on my stereo system (Chromecast Audio) from my laptop.

I’m in the same boat.
All other devices see casting options. PlexAmp for Windows only sees itself.

Maybe a PlexAmp person could advise?

As described further up the thread, this is a limitation of Chromecasts in general. It looks like Spotify invested in their own in-house solution to work around this, but that’s not currently something that the Plexamp devs are looking to do. If Google makes it possible to integrate with Chromecasts from desktop apps using official, supported methods, I’m sure this position will be reconsidered.

To clarify, by design Plexamp on Windows (and macOS, and desktop Linux) can currently cast to other Plex apps (companion play), or Sonos devices. Plexamp on mobile can also cast to Chromecast devices, and on iOS, to AirPlay.

Thanks for the reply - that is disappointing. Perhaps PlexAmp could use a different icon other than the ChromeCast icon.
