[BUG] Switching between monitors with different resolutions

Player Version#: 1.112.0.359-0d79a49f
I see this reported many times. I don’t see how community help is going to do anything. I wish there was an actual bug system.

The player cannot handle moving the window between 2 monitors that have different resolutions. The window frame stays the same but the contents get either squashed into a corner of the windows of oversized depending which resolution you are switching from/to.

Please fix. Looks like this bug has been around for years.

Bump this, and I also have this issue when you use different scaling so that is a problem.

@ggee Can you provide steps to reproduce this issue? I vaguely remember seeing this but usually moving the app window around resolves itself. You might want to try deleting your plex.ini file located in %LOCALAPPDATA%\Plex. You’ll need to sign in again after deleting it.

There aren’t much steps. I have 1440p and a 4K monitors. I start Plex on the 1440p and then I drag the window to the 4K. When I do, this happens.

and when I drag it back, I get this.

As you mentioned, sometimes if I drag back and forth a few times I may get lucky and it fixes itself. But I give up after 10 times if nothing happens.

I’ll also try and delete the file you mentioned to see if that helps.

Basically anythime you have two monitors which have set a different percentage of GUI/text scaling.
Windows allows you to adjust that for each monitor independently.
Which makes sense if one monitor has a much finer pixel grid than the other. Which happens often for private users who add a different monitor at a later date. (And they don’t want to throw out the existing monitor and buy two identical new monitors instead.)

Not a fix but another thing to try is to refresh the app with F5 then move the app window back and forth between monitors. While in this problematic state, locking the app window to the sides or top of any monitor also seemed to resolve the issue after using F5. Again, not fixes, just something to try while the issue is being investigated.

Good catch. Yes, my 1440p is 100% and my 4K is 125%, When I set them both to 100%, then I don’t see the problem. But I don’t want to set the 4K to 100% because the text is way too small.

Using the F5 and locking the app window to top does work more often. Still takes many attempts, but a little faster than moving back and forth.

hey i’m glad someone brought this up, i have the same exact issue and made a regular post about it but nothing came from it. glad it’s here in the bug section. I too have a 4k monitor and a 1440p and get the exact same problem when dragging between the 2 different resolutions, the plex app doesn’t seem to be able to handle that switch and flips out. it takes like 5+ open/close of the app to get it back to normal. It needs a fix and a checkbox/setting that lets you pin it to a certain monitor during startup so it always goes the monitor you want when starting the app.

This is already done in the plex.ini file. The last display the app was on before it was closed should be seen in this file under the [ui]. Sometimes Windows will mix the displays up, which will cause an issue where the app is open but not seen on either screen.

@TitanPlexServer as Otto called out, is one of your monitors using scaling? Have you tried deleting your plex.ini file to see if that improves things?

Have you tried this: Resolution/UI scaling issues - #6 by earshot_b ?
