Bug : Xbox trying to direct play, but just black screen

It seems that this is likely an issue that this file should be transcoded because it isn’t direclty supported by the xbox (AVC?) , but why doesn’t plex/xbox know that? This content plays fine via VNC, or even via the Plex web client (locally or remote)

logs attached.

weird : after reproducing the problem to generate the logs, I was lazy and just left the xbox on the black screen. 15 minutes later, the video started playing. so why would this ep behave differently?

Is the XBOX One S able to play HEVC encoded files within the direct play modus?

This is a standard xb1, not an xb1s

Both the Xbox One and Xbox One S can direct play HEVC.

I still use the Media Server Version 0.9.16.6 for Qnap ARM and other files for example x264 plays fine only HEVC files didn’t start? Is this an Problem from the Old Media Server Version?

I found the solution in the HEVC Thread.

I’m having a similar problem recently. Certain files just sit at a black screen instead of playing.
I’ve been using my xbox one but tried the same file in chrome and had the same issue.
Weird thing is, I’m running plex on a NAS and sometimes stopping/starting the plex package sometimes fixes the problem.

Try to turn off subtitles, that changed my cpu usage from 96-99% to around 30% on my nas

Just happened again, wouldn’t play. Only a black screen. Other videos play fine. Restarted the plex package on my NAS and tried again and it works fine.
Any ideas? It’s becoming a pain. Subtitles are off btw.

I installed the xbox one Plex app for a relative and I’m still experiencing the issue. Any file with ac3 our dts just sits at a black screen when attempting to play.

I have the same issue. Only started since moving to Plex Cloud.

Subtitles currently require a full video transcode, so that’s why turning them off reduces CPU usage.

DTS files will require a transcoding of at least the audio but AC3 files should able to direct stream. In either case if you enable (from the xbox plex app settings-> advanced → server logging → enabled) and then try and playback one of the items that causes the issue we can look at your server logs to see what is happening.

This support article explains how to pull your server logs after running one of the files:

If nothing is standing out in the logs we may need a sample of a file causing the issue so we can forward it onto Microsoft as it could be a decoder problem which is handled by the video player out of Plex’s control.
