Build 11988 “- Add direct play support for HEVC video codec in MP4/MOV files on devices supporting hardware decoding (A9 chip and above).”
After several tests on H265 in .mkv without decoding. the status on the connection tracking the file is still decoded in h264. no possibility to read these files live. This is really an option that is still missing from plex in comparison to Infuse

This is an interesting note - so to ensure no transcoding, all media must be in MP4?
Fortunately, I’m investigating several options for convert my MKV containers to MP4 anyway, but this is an interesting thing to know.
Yeah, right now media has to be in MP4 and of course audio should also be direct played.
At some point the server will support fMP4 and we can direct stream HEVC
