Building PLEX / file server / hardware transcoding

Hallo all,

i’m still thinking about building my own PLEX / file server.
Momently im running plex on a Synology DS918+ but with more then 7 transcodes de Synology cant keep up.

I have searched a lot on the internet and it strikes me that everyone uses almost “gaming” hardware to build a PLEX server, for a server that needs to be available 24/7, does energy consumption seem important?

Currently I have about 7 users outside the house who also use PLEX on mobile devices in addition to their TV.

Since I don’t want to think about who gets assigned which videos, I want to build a powerful media server that must be able to transcode 4k. (max. 3 streams)

basically I am thinking of the following setup:

MOBO: Gigabyte WS C246M PRO
CPU: Intel Xeon E-2146G
GPU: GTX 1660Ti

what do you think of this setup?

And will PLEX use HW transcoding with this setup?
Or does PLEX not support hardware transcoding when using intel Xeon?

Thanks in advance!

The transcoding will work. You might have a look at the Xeons with iGPU though. I have an E3-1225v6 with integrated GPU. It is working fine. It is not the beefiest of setups but does the job quite well. Dunno what the limit in H264 transcodes is since I never had so many

Thx for fast reply and information!

Sorry for the noob question but I’m a starting builder … :innocent:

but after some googling I now look at the: Intel Xeon E-2246G Coffee Lake 3.6-4.8 GHz 6-core.

This has built in:
Intel® UHD Graphics P630

So isn’t this an iGPU?

Ah well I am not too familiar with the Xeons
Yes that is what I meant. In this case you don’t necessary need an extra GPU.

Thank man!

You’re right, probably the CPU is powerful enough to do the transcodes, but I’ve seen in some youtube videos that it improves the quality significantly.

Thanks again!

Not the CPU, but the iGPU  hardware transcoding with that. If it is too lame, you can still add the geforce.
