Is there work being done on getting Caldera on Android TV? I think there have been many asking for this and the solution is almost there as there is an Apple TV version
Might not be the highest priority.
Maybe send Elan an onn 4K Pro box?
Will that make him care about the platform?
This sucks. Plex not having any employees working on Plexamp is so terrible. I wonder when they will stop all support for server stuff?
Mind blowing that a co-founder of Plex doesn’t use a Shield TV Pro
how is that mind blowing? I have an old shield from years ago, but i never liked the platform much and felt that Apple TV provided a much better experience.
i’ve always focused on the areas of Plexamp which interested me the most, and so working on a platform i don’t care for as a user and i’m not familiar with technically is just not that interesting.
Just figured since it is well known that the Shield Pro natively plays more codecs and formats than any other streaming box that it would be the natural choice for a developer.
Plex even developed a server to run on it.
There are also waaay more people running Android/Google TV than tvOS
Not hate, I love Plexamp and the work you’ve done on it… I’m blown away that it’s a one person show.
Yeah you would think a company would try to fulfil their paying customers needs. But this is Plex we are talking about and they seem very determined to ditch their old customers.
Not to mention Plex on ATV is essentially still broken with video stuttering after all of this time, which is insane.
I completely agree and kinda don’t…The Shield Pro is outdated at this point by not having support for VP9 and AV1. It’s funny cause my Sony X90L has better codec support than the Shield Pro. Is it slightly laggy yes but atleast it can play it natively. I’m not sure how audio support is cause so far I’m running everything by optical so who knows how audio passthrough via HDMI would work…
But I also can’t blame Elan for not supporting Android. There is so much one guy can do for plexamp on his own. Telling someone that clearly favors Apple is like telling an Android developer to make an app for IOS when they don’t own a single apple product.
Most of the blame should be put on Plex as a company neglecting Plexamp by only having Elan working on it. The app definitely deserves more support and it’s with that support we can only request for more features but for now we can only hope for Elan to do his best with Plexamp.
Just to ask a simple question, does the plex dev community have all the parts they need to make a comparable app to tvOS for android/fireTV/etc?
I mean, technically yes.
Practically having written a decent portion of the media server and cloud API back in the day, I may have a slight advantage.
Goes without saying! Just exclusively having an amazing UI in tvOS but leaving the “Windows” users behind for a product like Plex is unfortunate.
I find myself loving the Spotify TV UI where there’s cool pictures in the background with some sort of zoom animation happening, and having just a bare-minimum for other common TV UIs besides apple isn’t ideal. I personally have no plans in getting an apple TV in the near future, but also have no plans on leaving plex(amp) currently either, to the point that I would spend time vibe-coding my own TV UI for firestick if I had to.
Not ruling it out. Just want to get other stuff stable before considering new platforms.
cool I hate the android TV experience too I only use it to launch kodi
that said it would be so nice to have a way to control caldera endpoints for non Apple users on a handheld device like an android phone
I still have to run over to the desktop just to hit pause/play! feels like going backwards.
Doesn’t that already work?
You anyway need Plexamp to control Caldara desktop and headless. This means you can use Plexamp on Android/IOS the same way you use Plexamp Desktop to control Caldara.
Maybe I’m misunderstanding you, cause it sounds like you weren’t aware any Plexamp app can be used as remote to control playback on another device
none of the caldera endpoints show up as castable on android plexamp is the basic problem
not clear in my original message thanks for replying, I need to use plexamp on a linux or windows host to control caldera… unless I’m missing something I need an iphone or ipad?
off topic perhaps I should open another thread
I can control Caldera running on Windows, using Plexamp on Android mobile, as well as Plexamp on Windows.
Since I am using a preview version of Plexamp, it is possible that you may need to wait until that is publicly released.
Though you should verify that the device which is running Caldera, has an open port 32500 in its firewall. In the case of Windows, the network connection should be set to “private”. The Windows firewall is supposed to ask whether it shall open the port upon first run of Caldera.
Hi Otto
OK more info… I have hardwired caldera headless running on a few raspberry pi’s
Just don’t see any of them on my android phone, I do see a bunch of google cast devices
some plex kodi connect companions but no calderas.
I don’t think there are any firewall rules involved this is a simple home lan.
Minor issue really which will probably be fixed sometime, sorry for hijacking a thread.
The multi room whole house audio is what has me jacked

Just to prove it works on Android, This is Plexamp 4.12.4 on my phone. You can also see on my network I have Caldara running on my windows laptop (AsusF15), Plexamp headless running on Pi (this is not the new Caldara headless), as well as my Shield and Sony TV that are both Android TVs.
If you are unable to see it in casting window on android, maybe try reloading it cause for me it usually takes like 10 to 15 seconds to show up.
I haven’t tried how multi room works yet cause I still haven’t used Caldara headless or the Caldara tvOS app so I can’t say anything about that but the Caldara desktop amp for windows works well for me on the current update (1.0.45)
