I tried to install it on my google tv chromecast but the play store link on the website returns a not found error though. Has the caldera app had to be removed from the play store by any chance?

Probably. I couldn’t find any official/public beta link.
I did the same thing, I assumed if there was a link it was intended to work.
Perhaps this is a difference between PMs and devs. 
I think a week ago? Elan had sent out this message and I immediately DMed him so that’s how I got early access to Caldera on Android TV.
When he announced it on reddit here, He said that google play has a thing where it needs to go through testers for 14 days so maybe that’s why it hasn’t been released publicly yet.
There are certainly reasons software may not be made available to the public, again, it’s just that if there is a link on a public page, people gonna click it.
People will click a button that says “don’t click”… so obviously they’ll click a button that offers to download a nice app. I suppose the current situation will be temporary – once it’s released, there’ll be the usual public/beta versions.
