Can I add a folder on a different network to my library?

Hi All, I am thinking about subscribing to PlexPass but I’d like to confirm the below.

Currently I have 2 folders in my Movies library. 1 folder is to my internal hard drive and 1 folder is to my external hard drive. Is it possible to add a 3rd folder from a computer that is on another network?

For example, could I add a folder from the computer at my vacation home to my Movies library so that all my movies could be displayed in one place? Or would I have to create a different server for my computer at my other residence?

Thanks!

Technically it is possible, but it is not very sensible to do so. I don’t recommend you to do it that way. It will bite you in the back.

I’d recommend you to setup another server.
You can then switch servers in any of your Plex clients.

Thanks for the quick response. Can you explain how I would be able to do so? Also, why is it not recommended?

Would I be able to just simply install Plex on the computer at my second location, log on using my credentials, and then simply just add a folder? I want to see everything in one place — I think that would be easier than switching servers on my Plex client. But if there’s something I’m missing, let me know!

If you have remote setup on your server you need just a player at your other location.

You become a client of your server.

Thanks for your response. I know I can play items from my library at my other location, but I’m trying to add files I have saved on my other location to the server so that I can play and add files from both locations but have only 1 library. I don’t want to have to change servers to play what I have at different locations, rather I’d like to see everything in 1 library. Is this possible?
