Can I force stop a stream?

Hello,

From time to time I’d like to force stop a stream that for example one of my kids are playing. Can this be done?

I’ve read that one possibility is to click stop under the username playing in the Dashboard. But no such stop button appears when hovering over the username.

There should be a way for the server admin to force stop a stream, should it not?

Check out the Now Playing tiles on your server‘s dashboard.

Thank you tom80H,

From the link you provided:

“Plex Pass subscribers can hover over the user information at the bottom to reveal a Stop playback button.”

Unfortunately I do not see a Stop playback button when hovering over the user information. Nothing happens at all when doing so…

Do you have Plex dash? Easiest way to do it. While on the now playing tab, click hamburger menu (3 dots next to playback media) and choose stop playback.

Thank you blackzwe,

Unfortunately, for some reason, Stop Playback is not available for some content.

For now it seems like the possibility to stop music files does not exist.

Please see the following two screenshots. Although in Norwegian (I tried changing the app language to english) you might recognize that “Stopp avspilling” (Stop playback) is not available on the music file - only on the movie.

The server owner should be able to stop a music stream.

I ran a quick test and was able to do so on my server.

See screenshots for:

  • Plex Dashboard (Plex Web)
  • Plex Dash (Android)
  • Tautulli mobile app (Android)

It seems to depend on the client. When I saw this come up last year, I was able to stop music streams that were playing via the web/desktop app, but not PlexAmp or the Android mobile app. Just tested again, and saw the same behavior.

Sure enough. I tested only with Plex web. Just tried PlexAmp and could not stop the stream.

Thanks.

I see the same

Correct

Should this be reported as a bug or is it as designed by the Plex team?

I am testing now with Plex/web playback and it terminates correctly.

Can you help me refine testing & recreating this?

I have Linux, Apple, and Nvidia Shield here (plus android tv and AFT 4K)

Plexamp works different from all other Plex clients. It pre-caches the files during playback and plays them locally in the app so there is technically no “session” on the server to be stopped.

@SwiftPanda16 Thanks for the info on Plexamp.

Do you know if Android Mobile works the same as Plexamp when playing music?

When playing music in Android Mobile the option to stop the stream does not appear. It does appear when streaming movie/tv show/etc.

Was typing this when I saw your post…

Playing music using Plexamp 4.10.1 or Plex Android Mobile 10.16.0.746 on Pixel 6a running Android 14.

Using Plex Dashboard (Plex Web, app.plex.tv).

If I mouse over my username, the option to Stop Playback does not appear.

When playing music with Plex Web (app.plex.tv), Stop Playback appears and works as expected.

PMS version does not matter. Tried with 1.29.2.6264 (Ubuntu) and 1.40.3.8502 (Synology, DSM 7).

Hello ChuckPa,

Yes, I can confirm that I am able to stop a stream when the client is web player (browser). See pictures below.

However, when the client is Plexamp I am not able to stop the stream and here lies the issue.

Plex3
Plex4

Quite possibly.

see SwiftPanda16’s response above on why there’s no “session” to be terminated.

But it just isn’t Plexamp, regular Plex apps playing music on mobile can’t be terminated either. Am I wrong?

Can’t be terminated on Android TV either. Will test Apple TV, my guess is it’s the same performance. I could be wrong, but all media is subject to some level of caching isn’t it? Music just happens to have smaller file sizes and greater compatibility with players than video. Willing to learn here.

The Plex Android mobile app behaves the same as Plexamp Android mobile, as described in @SwiftPanda16’s post.
