Can i plug the media source into my router, instead of my laptop?

I bought a new router as my old one kept turning off.  I use a vpn, 'Private internet access'

my new one, a netgear d6200 has a usb port on it so i have plugged my hdd in to that, instead of the laptop.

It seems i can still download stuff using the laptop, and save it directly on the hdd as before.

Will i be able to use plex connect with this set up?

PMS and PlexConnect need to run on your laptop , I guess. But if you set up PMS correctly, it should be able to grab the data form the hard drive connected to the router.

Set up the hard drive as a mounted network drive, set as PMS's central media location and you should be golden. I would worry about the constant and frequent writes and read to an external drive like that, as well as the speed, but you should be fine for a couple of years.
