Hello all, newcomer here. I’m looking to get a home media server going, and still have lots to learn.
Firstly, I’d like to be able to rip my DVD collection into my storage drives, and stream it throughout the home (rarely if ever remotely). I have a very powerful computer that I’ve built as a digital audio workstation, and I’m curious to know if it will run plex and my audio software simultaneously. The computer specs are as follows:
Intel i7 8700K processor (water cooled)
MSI Z370 SLI plus mobo
250GB Samsung 960 evo M.2 ssd
500GB Samsung 860 evo ssd
16GB corsair vengeance 3000mhz ram
No graphics card, DAW work is cpu intensive
Will this setup run plex just fine if I add separate storage for it? It runs 24/7 already, so that’s a plus. Will this setup allow me to rip my collection right onto the plex server? Thanks in advance!
That spec is more than enough for what you are planning so if you are fine with your PC running 24/7 (power consumption wise) then all you need is storage for ripped DVDs.
While that will probably run fine and Plex is designed to coexist with other programs as well as possible it is always best practice to have any server system running without interference, except for necessary support programs, on a computer dedicated to the task.
Your setup seems a little different than the typical one for people asking this kind of question and, if I understand your usage situation correctly, you “might” be in better shape to run Plex on your existing system than most people trying to do that.
In your situation I “think” I would give it a try before investing in more hardware and use external hard drives for the media storage. If it turns out you do have problems it would just be a matter of installing Plex on a new system and moving the external drives to the new system and allowing Plex to rebuild the library database.
That answers the question perfectly! As far as ripping DVDs, how do I go about this? Just download the software to rip copyrighted stuff and save it to the plex folder?

I am not really the one to ask about ripping DVDs. What I use is to Rip my DVDs is no longer available and after I rip my DVDs I use either FreeMake or, more often, Handbreak and I use quite basic settings for each. I do not use any advanced settings for audio or video and most people use advanced audio and video so my recommendations would be of little value.
My old eyes and ears do not see or hear the improvement so there is no improvement for me for the increased size of the file or the complexity of the process.
