Can not play any 1080p content

For some reason I can not play any 1080p content. Will play for five second, freeze for five, then repeat the cycle.

No network issues and connected via gigabit. No transcoding issues either as this is occurring on DirectStream connect.

Any ideas? Works beautifully on 720p content.

I'm getting the same behaviour with the 1080p I've tried as well. 720p seems fine. Also connected via wired gigabit ethernet and no transcoding issues (even the files that need to be transcoded, transcode properly to my roku which is right beside my xbox)

No issues here with 1080p content (H.264 w/ AAC and AC3 in M4V container). What codecs and container is the media? What is the bitrate?

Any bitrate, any codec (AC3, Dolby Digital, DTS etc). The common theme is 1080p.

What is your server? I'm running mine on a Qnap.

Well if it is DTS, then it is transcoding which could cause the freeze/lag if the computer you have PMS installed on is not up to the challenge of transcoding. For best chance of success, try an mp4/m4v with h.264 and aac and/or ac3 audio and see if the problem persists.  Also, i saw in other forum posts other people having problems and they are connected over ethernet. I'm connected via Wifi and have no issues. I know it sounds strange but try connecting via Wifi and see if there's a difference.

So you're running PMS on a NAS. NAS are extremely under-powered when it comes to transcoding so i'm pretty sure what you're seeing is the NAS struggling to transcode the file in realtime.

It’s a Qnap TS-879 Pro with an i3 processor; it is not underpowered and has worked fine on all other clients.

Probably helps if you can post some media info on what it is doing. You can also check in the plex activity area and check to see if it is transcoding or not. Other platforms might not have required the transcoding and if you are seeing that now, that might be the issue.

I've got a ton of 1080p content and have had no issues playing any of them yet. I did a lot of testing yesterday with various containers.

One thing I havent tried that I will when I get home is adjusting the bitrate, its possible my 1080p videos are set to 20mb/s 1080p and my pc sometimes has a hard time transcoding that, the 8mbps profile works fine though.

I had the saem problem until I changed the quality on the xbox one app to highest. It was set at 8mbps 1080p but as soon as I changed it to highest it played my 1080p without pausing

If it plays and freezes, it’s likely overloaded CPU or network. If you have wired network, raise the quality setting, that can help because it will remux instead of transcode.

Wired network, gigabit speed (and going into a managed Dell PowerConnect switch). Already at the highest settings and the CPU on my QNap is hardly being touched.

The odd thing is that it only occurs on 1080p content.

Do the files have subtitles? My NAS has a similar CPU - it can transcode very well generally speaking, but the way Plex handles my subtitles kills the CPU. Also, if the file contains DTS-HD this currently seems to kill my CPU too…

I’m not sure if it makes a difference for Plex, but if you output to an AV receiver check the audio settings on your Xbox to see if it’s set to bitstream out (rather than 5.1/7.1 uncompressed). I think this helped me, but I could be wrong! I also have it set to DTS rather than Dolby Digital.

No subtitles.

Come on guys, this is completely unusable. I love Plex but being told "it's your network" or "it's your Qnap" when they worked just fine previously is not good enough.

Saying it's "not good enough" doesn't magically fix things. The Plex team is limited by what the Xbox can do. If the Xbox can't natively support subtitles then transcoding will be necessary to add them in. And if your NAS can't handle that amount of transcoding, then the solution is to either wait until Xbox improves or to upgrade your NAS.

Personally, I'd steer clear of any boxed NAS system. They're almost always underpowered. You can put together a server with decent specs for a reasonable $500-$1000 price.

I had a similar experience last night and i always thought the initial problem for this post was poor transcoding speed. However, i have PMS running on a quad core i-7 at 4.0Ghz. My Xbox is connected via wifi (hold off on saying it's wifi). The video i was playing was an mp4 with h264 video and an aac and ac3 audio tracks. The overall bitrate for the file is around 19 mb/s.  At first i thought it was just the bitrate was too high and was choking the wifi. But here's the strange part. The video only stutters, pauses and continues when the aac audio is selected. If i change the audio track to ac3 (which is 640 kbit/s compared to the 192 kbit/s for the aac) it works perfectly, no stuttering or pausing. So it's not a wifi issue. I haven't had a chance to really dig into the file to see if there could be something strange with the aac audio track but there's something funny going on. This was DirectPlay btw. If i change to transcode, no issues.

Please, for the last time, can people stop saying it is the NAS. It is more than powerful enough and has been working transcoding to various devices just fine.

Looking at the logs and live CPU, the NAS is nowhere near being at CPU capacity.

what is Plex set to for the quality?  (When you start to play something, if you hit A, go to the ellipses, and then quality)   Check the logs also, see what bitrate you're getting log location: C:\Users\\AppData\Local\Plex Media Server\Logs  and see what the bitrate of your stream is.  I was seeing issues with the bitrate being throttled below 8mbps which will cause your 1080p to hiccup.

Also while you are streaming, and seeing the issue login to the web app, go to Activity, and then see what is going on with the stream.  There should be an info button on whatever you are streaming, it will tell you if it is transcoding at all, (which it most likely is).

Hey OP - you're sure being a little whiny for someone asking for help.

Folks have given you what they believe are the issues. You disagree. Fine. Now it's your turn to figure out the problem yourself, or stop using the Xbox One app.

I'm sorry - but people are giving you free advice and assistance and all you're doing is pissing all over their suggestions. Go figure it out yourself.
