In the course of 2017 I purchased a Western Digital (WD) My Passport Wireless Pro with the intention to keep our children busy in the rear seat when on holiday with the car. In the supportive media section of the My Passport Wireless Pro the Plex Mediaserver is even recommended to stream content.
Unfortunately, it does not work as intended. In our home everything works fine, as we have broad internet connection by WIFI and the latest Apple iPads and Apple iPhones link smoothly to Plex when the “My Passport (2,4 GHz) or (5 GHz)” connections have been selected and connected to. However, when I take the My Passport Wireless Pro out of reach of the internet, the Plex application stops working.
The WD My Passport Wireless Pro is working properly as when I connect through the (WD) My Cloud application on the iPad I can acces the content on the My Passport Wireless Pro device. However, the My Cloud interface is not as user friendly as the Plex mediaserver, especially not for children.
I was wondering if there is a solution to this problem so that during our summer holiday in two weeks time our children can enjoy their movies collection by streaming the content from My Passport Wireless Pro to their iPads by using Plex Mediaserver.
Ps. The most recent updates of Plex Mediaserver have been installed on all the different devices
I have the same problem, I bought the same Western Digital (WD) My Passport Wireless Pro solely for travel purposes without internet (Cruise ships and car travel). I already have a plex media server at home, what is the point of buying a portable drive designed for plex if its not portable. I have wasted weeks testing different methods of trying to get it to work.
Trick One: Disable Plex Authentication on Your Local Network:
I added individual IP Addresses to the network authentication and the set of addresses neither of which made any difference.
Trick Two: Use DLNA Apps as a Fallback
This sort of works partially but sucks, I love the plex media library API and the way it displays everything you do not get this with DLNA access, it is also dog slow to access anything and it not an acceptable workaround for Plex.
I am very disappointed at the amount of time and research I have had to do just to try and get this $200 drive advertised for this very purpose to work. it does not and I am very upset with Plex, especial as I paid for the lifetime membership and there is no support other than these un-answered forums
I’ve just kicked off my own thread about this exact same problem with Plex Home included in the mix - its a nightmare. Given the excitement that the Plex team themselves had about this product its a bit of a travesty to see the state it is now in
I have the same issue. I am seeing that the plex on the WD is marked unauthorized in the iOS app.
This is when it happens:
when the WD is not connected to my local wifi (hence no internet access)
The Ipad is connect to the WD internal hotspot
I am not happy given that I bought the WD my passport pro SOLELY as a travel plex server… which is what it’s clearly designed for.
Plex devs: I am a lifetime sub for plex and I think you really need to look into this. You need to enable an offline capabiltiy for this devce that you are promoting on your site, and is a key selling point of the device. Its not like we hacked plex onto something…
Indeed, this is a pity Plex completely ignores obvious user problems with a device that (mind you!) comes SHIPPED with a Plex server on it! So it kind of gives you hope, that at lease it would function as advertised.
Instead, all we get is a “unauthorized server” and no access to the Plex settings page on the device (the web page just fails to load at any time, giving you the black screen…
