Plex not running offline with MyPassport Wireless Pro server

I purchased a 4TB WD MyPassport Wireless Pro to use as a Plex server as my family and I drive around in our RV. I’d previously used Plex at home and it worked really well. I’m a PlexPass member.

So I get this drive home and initialize it, load it up, and configure a server on my MacBook. Everything works fine when the drive has pass through internet. However, when we go on the road, “Plex is unreachable” messages on every device. We have some smartphones and laptops that use it. All of them work when the Passport has internet access, but as soon as we leave WiFi service area…nothing.

I’m not sure what I’m doing wrong. I’ve enabled DLNA in the server settings and added the IP exceptions. I’m using the latest versions of firmware, server, and apps. Is there something else I can do? Every device can see and connect to the drive’s WiFi point on both 2.4 and 5ghz, it just won’t allow access for some reason.

Any help would be appreciated. I’m at my wit’s end here

I ended up switching back to the default Twonky server and it works well with VLC on all devices. Not as elegant to say the least, but what’s the point of having Plex on this device if it doesn’t work except in certain scenarios. If my kids can’t use it, it’s too complicated.

When I first bought the MyPassport Wireless Pro, Plex worked great. It was very easy and straight forward to select it as a server in the mobile apps when users were offline. With each update to the apps it gets less useful. I still do not understand why Plex thinks an internet connection should be necessary to connect to a local server.

Do not buy the WD MyPassport Wireless Pro for Plex, it is not worth the headache.
