I don’t believe I have any issues but can someone explain AGENTS for me a little bit better? When I come to that area and click on them I try to add as many as I can thinking that will be better when scanning and finding what I need. Is that correct?

The term “agent” refers to the part of Plex that looks up the metadata, artwork etc. that will be linked to your media. An agent will use various online sources as well as local resources (depending on your library configuration).
e.g.

  • title, description, release dates, genres, content rating
  • cast, crew
  • poster, background art
  • theme music (for shows)
  • additional information could include
    • popular tracks
    • artists on tour
    • reviews
    • critic/audience ratings
    • local / online extras and trailers
    • information about related movies/shows/artists/…

It’s part of a “tandem” with the “scanner” part of Plex. The scanner looks for the files you associated with a library and collects some identifying characteristics based on the file naming. If you follow the naming schema suggested by Plex it’ll e.g. look for the movie title and release year. For a tv-show the scanner will look for the show name and what season/episode each file reflect.

With the input from the scanner, the agent will then attempt to match your library items – depending on what agent you use, this can be an online database like The Movie Database, IMDb or TheTVDb.

Thank you very much. I’m starting to realize how to use agents better. I just don’t the little things like what is the difference between Plex Scanner and Plex Movie Scanner. They all seem to be redundant I think.
