So I got this strange apology e-mail today about not being active. I thought to myself, I use my plex server every single day. Maybe I should log in and ask a question that I’ve been wanting to ask for some time. I spend time lurking through other questions and similar ones have been asked but I haven’t found an exact match yet.
Anyway, I created my own TV station so to speak. I plugged a Roku into my router in the basement and the HDMI into a splitter and sent the signal to all my TV’s. I created a playlist and randomized all of my TV shows and now I have my own commercial free TV station. It runs for months at a time and I can always watch something from my collection. It works great. I started a second station that plays all music videos (I finally got my MTV back!). It would really work well for someone that has a waiting room or similar environment where continuous entertainment is a plus.
One thing that bugs me is while the shows appear to be random what I think is really happening is it creates a long list in random order and plays it over and over again. This is better than nothing but if I remove content everything comes to a screeching halt (eventually) with a media error and if I add media it doesn’t get playback for a very long time. This becomes very obvious on the MTV station because the videos are short and it is easy to recognize that the videos always play in the same order. Can a feature be made to select the next video to play as the previous is ending (true random-ness)?
It would also be a cool feature to have more control on how each series are throttled into the queue. In other words, TV series with 10 seasons won’t dominate the queue as much over ones that have 2 seasons.
Thanks for listening. I have other small tweaks but I’ll leave it at this for tonight.
