I’ve been thinking about this topic for a while, trying to figure out why it might be taking so long.
It seems like there are two basic ideas being suggested.
A: Collections are presented inside existing libraries similar to a sub folder.
B: Collections are presented at the top level like we see with Playlists.
Personally I’m leaning more toward the B option with the caveat that they make it cross library compatible. I would like to create a Star Wars or Marvel, or Christmas collection, etc. that groups movies and TV shows under a single manually ordered collection.
Maybe they should implement both though so that the libraries automatically show “folders” at the top for any “collection” inside the library, but also a top level collection view that shows all collections together across the entire system.
I’m more leaning towards option A considering a 1st implementation will be inside libraries… however it’d be great if you could configure it so a certain collection shows up in playlists or in the library overview (such as a flag in the to-be collection record’s edit dialog). I’m still trying to wrap my head around the mixed collections. For the few TV shows with movies (or vice versa), I’ve created hard links on my file system and included the “copy” in the tv show’s specials folder. Still… me not using a certain use case doesn’t mean nobody else should get it
just a little bumper and an interesting side note…
there’s been some recent changes to Plex Web… if you have same named collections in different libraries, those will all be listed in the “related media” section. This will also go across library types (so showing e.g. my How to train your Dragon movies as related collection in the Dreamworks’ Dragons TV show)
I hope that’s not just some bug but an indicator for SOME activity in this area fingers crossed
