Cannot play 4K movie on my Synology DS1520+

Server Version#: 1.24.3.5033-7000
Player Version#: 4.62.1

Hello,

My nas is a DS1520+ latest DSM 7.0 (celeron J4125 2Ghz) with 5 hard drive Western Digital Gold in Ext4. and 8Go Ram.

Plex works great excepted i cannot play 4K movie. When i try to play one, the plex is just keepin’ loading forever, my LAN network is fine (1000 Mbits).

Hope you could help, thx !

Please ?

Do you have hw-accelerated transcoding enabled on that machine?
The Celeron is completely unfit for any 4K transcoding using barely its CPU – for reference… 4K transcoding will require a PassMark benchmark of approx. 12000 to 17000 (SDR vs. HDR) – your CPU gets to approx. 3000.

Keep in mind… even with hw-accelerated transcoding enabled, the iGPU of your Celeron will not be able to cover all transcoding scenarios. The most common use case it won’t cover is burning subtitles into the video – that’s a job only the CPU itself can do… which is again underpowered to do the job w/ 4K media.

Ok thx for your reply, so whats the best synology for 4k trasncoding with plex ? I dont care if its expansive, i need the best one  !

Thx

I don’t think you’ll find a NAS with that horsepower – at least I’m not aware of a model with a CPU that can transcode a high-quality 4K video.

You can take a look at the NAS compatibility list. Based on the software transcoding columns, there’s only very few models from QNAP/Netgear which MIGHT be able to transcode some lower-bitrate 4K SDR videos – none of the Synos though.

Have you tried running Plex in docker? I’ve read on more than a few occasions it can handle the HDR Tone Mapping feature when run in docker. I know for sure that J4125 can do at least 1x 4k HDR to 1080p SDR transcode with HDR Tone Mapping turned on. I have one on an ASRock board running Ubuntu and it does it fine.

Burning in subtitles doesn’t work well with hardware acceleration though. It can do 1x 1080p to 1080p transcode burning subs with hardware acceleration off, but that rides the CPU kinda hard.

Trumpy,

May I ask for clarity on the below line?

“You should also disable HDR Tone Mapping in Plex Settings > Server > Transcoder > Show Advanced.”

As a DS1520+ owner looking to ensure that 4K (HEVC H.265 SDR + HDR) content transcodes optimally, should I disable HDR Tone Mapping to ensure optimal performance? I’ve noticed that some H.265 HDR content gets trapped in a “buffering” state, no matter if the stock driver or i965 driver is used. With disabling HDR tone mapping allowing for 4K HDR content to transcode smoothly?
