Cannot play music by mood

  1. I can automate with MediaMonkey to sort all my files into folders. My files are named <artist> - <track>. I’m enclined to assign them all in folders respectively <artist> - <album>, i.e. NOT using the exact itunes structure (I don’t want my files to be renamed in track number for example). Would this work?

This will work, as long as the track number is in the embedded meta data.
And if your files have a format from which Plex can read embedded meta data.
I know this works with mp3, flac and OGG files. There may be others.

  1. If yes to 1) how should I do with compilations. For now, all my files from a compilation have the name of the compilation as <album artist>? Would folders named <album artist> - <album> be fine? Or should I name them VA - <album>? I’d like the first option to be valid.

You can do however you please, as long as you keep these folder names with the embedded meta data in sync.
Plex wants the ‘Album Artist’ meta tag. In your preferred method, you must then put the name of the compilation (or the name of the series of compilations) into the ‘Albumn Artist’ meta tag.

  1. I don’t want Plex to change my metadata. I know it won’t change it in the files, but I rather that metadata be used by Plex. So if I click on “Use embedded tags” in the music library settings, would the Sonic/gracenote information needed still be collected but not attached visually to the files? (am I clear?)

Yes, that is exactly what I am doing as well, because both last.fm and Gracenote have errors.

If you want Plex to respect your embedded metadata completely, you must also do this:
Settings - Server - Agents - Albums - last.fm/Premium Music
drag the line ‘Local Media Assets’ to the top of the stack

  1. If yes to 3), then would I be able to use Plex Mix AND Moods?

Yes.

  1. Have the number of genres selected in the library settings an impact on the Plex Mix / Moods stuff? I can choose between 15, 75, or 500.

I don’t think so.

side note: I tried the ‘500’ option once, but this was not to my liking. It generated several genres: first a broader category and then it added an additional attribute to this category, like electronics, electronics-alternative

  1. If yes to 4), would that still works with tracks from compilations or only albums are counted for in PlexMix and Moods?

Yes. I have moods and Plex Mix available in most of my compilation albums although I usually have them organised under Various Artists and not in some “invented” AlbumArtist. But I don’t know if that woudl make a difference.
I’d say try it out with 1 - 3 compilation albums.

  1. Finally, do you know if Plex Mix and Moods are available from Sonos after integration of Plex ?

Sorry, I don’t know the Sonos integration. I’ve never even seen one of these.

Final note: there is an issue in the current web app that is installed with Plex Server. It doesn’t always display the Plex Mix menu option.
Make sure to use the ‘hosted’ web app from http://app.plex.tv/desktop which fixes that.
