Can someone please help me out to chose the right synology NAS model to use as a storage for 4k HDR movies. I have nvidia shield tv pro the plex media server will run on the shield not on the NAS.
do I need to add M.2 NVMe SSD ? or not dose it help out?
I don’t mean to dispute but I fail to understand where SSD cache benefits “watching the same thing over and over again”. PMS does each playback (transcoding) individually. It saves nothing between playback sessions.
SSD cache does help the whole volume.
Where we find SSD cache (either NVMe or SATA-3) used is for the metadata (database and posters). We find it most often used as primary storage for the entire metadata library (SSD volume - not cache)
Normal HDDs are more than adequate to serve for transcoder temporary space. HDDs typically are 100+ MB/sec (which translates to 750Mbps of video).
Thanks Chenks for your suggestion. So i will not need NVMe as the plex media server will be run on shield right ? And I think the DS1019+ are best choice than DS918+. Last question what you recommendation for the hard disk ( WD or Seagate ) I’m talking about the 10 TB.
100% correct. The J3455 CPU can transcode a serious amount of video.
Where the J3455 falls down is with subtitles.
This is why it’ll be necessary to see actual DEBUG (not VERBOSE) logs of a typical problematic playback session. (just need the first 15-20 seconds before downloading logs)
It’s possible but not too likely from what I see here. ( I have a 2019 Shield Pro. )
Caveat is that 1. it’s wired gigabit. 2. I am pretty meticulous about media curation.
SMB/CIFS 1.x would be too slow. There are network settings on the Synology which can be looked at.
When i had the DS918+ pleax server was installed on the NAS but before selling it i mount the NAS volume to shield and i was able to play the 4k files without any issues.
I have found that the best option for direct play is to mount the NAS and let the shield to be the plex media server. So shall i go for WD or Seagate please ( 10 TB ) ?
