My Windows computer/server crashed, so I decided to change out the motherboard, CPU and RAM. The hard drives were still fine, no issues. While updating I installed an M2 drive. I pulled the old registry and the files from the Program files and used those to replace the new ones when I downloaded Plex Media Server. I followed the instructions on the page “Move an Install to Another System”. However, I was unable to find the Server Data that is found under Users/XXXX/AppData/Plex. Even when I show hidden files, still no Plex folder. I still have access to my old C drive if needed, it’s plugged in and accessible. What can I do to get my old library to load back up so I don’t have to go through and fix everything all over again. I won’t be back by my computer for a few hours till I finish my shift. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
check for C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Plex Media Server
Unfortunately I tried that. I have 3 users on my old C drive (now D drive), 2 of them do not show a Plex folder in it anywhere, and the user I used to use won’t open. I double click on it and it just shows the search bar but never opens.
That sounds as if the hard drive is damaged. This might very well be the reason for the outage.
You can try a CHKDSK run, but its “repair” option is an exercise in futility if the drive is physically damaged.
This may be a stupid question, but if I can access just about everything else on that drive, would it be an issue of it being damaged you think?
Yes. Please read up on how hard drives work.
I do understand how HD’s work, just honestly don’t think it’s physically damaged, but I’m going to try the CHKDSK run when I get home and see what information it gives me.
And the outage reason was diagnosed as the CPU being the problem. Figured I’d be better off replacing everything that needed an upgrade anyways.
Other thing I can suggest is using an elevated explorer window (could be a file permission issue)
I’ll try both suggestions and let y’all know if either work.
Thanks for the input so far!!
Ok, I have no idea what to even say.
I got home from work at the hospital last night, and before doing y’all’s recommendations, I decided to try to open the folder one more time, and sure as hell it opened, and I was able to get right to the folder I needed. I moved all the items and restarted the PC, and the library was loaded. So thank y’all so much for the recommendations! Just glad I didn’t have to start from scratch.
The only issue I’m having now is access outside the network. We created a port fwd in the router for the PC. Plex shows as connected for outside networks, and says it reads the port. I am able to pull it up on my phone from work outside the network, but my siblings can’t for some reason. I’m guessing it’s just a setting on their side I’m going to work with later, but if I’m off, feel free to let me know what y’all think.
Thanks again guys, and have a great day in case I don’t hear back!!
