I can’t play any AVI files with 720p and more on android TV devices like Mibox3 and Chromecast 4 and 1080p on android device - Redmi Note 9 Pro. No issue with any MKV even 4K.
From the Plex app logs I can see like my devices doesn’t support this resolution???
I have tried many different versions of the Plex clients and even with old player I can’t play AVI files with 720p and more on android TV devices and 1080p on my phone.
Do you know what encoding these files are? Your log shows mpeg4. If these are AVI, most likely these are xvid or divx.
Nope. Not for xvid or divx. These are older formats and created around the time of DVDs. There are software updates that could allow devices to support higher resolutions, but Plex mainly relies on hardware and my guess is most hardware manufacturers don’t updated they hardware to support these higher resolutions (if that’s even possible).
I can confirm that my Samsung S9 can direct play 720p vidx but needs a transcode for 1080p.
If these are not playing for you, do you have transcoding turned off on your server?
I’m not using transcoding, if I turn it on that I can play it transcoded. But why I can’t play it direct? Plex add-on for Kodi on those devices can play it directly without any issue. I can play it also with other apps like VLC. Is it possible to fix it on Plex?
Your log doesn’t show me enough to know what hardware support your box has, but the trasncode reasoning indicates the device told the Plex app the video wasn’t supported. It’s possible Kodi is ignoring/not using that info and just playing the file anyways.
You need a log where you’re trying to play the AVI file
Shut the client down, restart and enable logging, then try and play the AVI and make sure the behavior happens, then immediately post the log afterward.
