I have a server set up and have a subscription to plex pass. I only have a desktop and it’s used also to play my games on Steam, such as DOOM, Witcher, and Spore. But when I play my games, such as DOOM, it seems to keep Plex from establishing a connection to my desktop from any of my other devices. Is there a way to fix this issue?
In general servers should have no other regular task. It is just asking for trouble to use your desktop computer as a Plex server and for your gaming.
The way to “fix” the problem is to set up a separate server or a separate gaming computer.
I know that is not what you want to hear but it is the only solution sure to work.
Alright, so is there an easy method for this? Could a Raspberry pi 3 or something of the sort be a good enough replacement for a server? I’m fairly new to this sort of thing.
I do not recommend a PI or any similar device as a server unless you get everything in a format that will direct play and you are willing to babysit the server a lot and spend a lot of time and effort getting it set up.
If you look on Amazon or Ebay or many other places you can find a refurbished i5 or i7 desktop for a very reasonable price. Just be sure that the one you choose has a processor with a Passmark score of at lease 2500 or so for each transcoded stream you want have active at the same time. I recommend a minimum Passmark of 5000 for any server even if it is going to only stream one stream at a time.
Edit: As example this computer would make a decent server for two streams at a time as long as you ar not interested in things like 4K.
