Can't update plex server any longer

After attempting to upgrade from multiple releases now after the update I get a popup on server start that just says ERROR with an OK button. Nothing in the logs and no crash report.
After enabling verbose/debug logging I get only this in the Plex Update Service Launcher.log

Perform a manual update:

  • Stop/quit/end Plex Server with the tray icon
  • deinstall Plex Server with the regular ‘Apps’ control panel of Windows (do not use 3rd party ‘Uninstaller’ software like Revo etc.)
  • for safety, reboot Windows
  • download the installation exe of the newer version and install it

Thanks for the quick reply. I had done a similar method initially, where I downloaded the installer, uninstalled plex, rebooted, installed plex.

I did the exact method you listed with the same results just now.

Ok, I got it to work, I’m not 100% sure why it worked but here goes.
This time, I stopped plex ran the install for 1.18.5.2260 it completed successfully and tried to launch. That failed with the ERROR popup. I uninstalled plex and reinstalled from the same installer but this time I ran that installer as administrator (as opposed to relying on the UAC prompt) and that worked.

I spoke too soon. I rebooted and it’s back to the error popup again and I had to revert it.
I’m suspecting it may have something to do with the hdhomerun device now and will need to keep testing.
