Captions and Audio Stream

Server Version#: 1.19.3.2852
Plex Web Version#: 4.30.2
Player Version#:
Handbreak version 1.3.2 (20020050300), MacOS 10.15.5

When I am converting my DVDs to digital files that can be hosted on my Plex Server using Handbreak, I will select additional audio feeds and captions (normally to add Audio Commentary and “Info Text”, “Sing Along Lyrics” or other alternate text captions) and I will click the GEAR button on each line of the additional audio and caption track to provide it was a descriptive name Such as “Directors Commentary”, “Actors Commentary”, “Info Text”. etc… . However when I transfer them into Plex, the Plex Player only displays them by the initial generic description such as for captions: “English (Wide Screen) [VOBSUB]” or for audio “English AAC CoreAudio” .

How do I get Handbreak and Plex to play nice together so that the additional tracks are named in a user friendly manner (while I may now remember that the movie or episode has additional tracks for Commentary or Alt. Captions, there is guarantee that as I build my library that I will remember this in the future."

However, what Plex provides in the UI just shows me three of the same audio and two of the same caption. When the content is actually different.

Screenshot of two sets of captions: the first track happens to be the standard captions (e.g Closed Captions) while the second is an “info text” (text based factoids and descriptions)

Whereas in this screenshot the first two are actually the same audio normal audio track. The last one is a commentary track.

While I know this now since I just ripped it, going forward in the next week or so… I won’t remember this and there is no way to provide clues going forward.

If the information is in the Metadata, shouldn’t Plex be picking up said metadata? If not, how do we send this “bug” into Plex to fix.

You can vote for the Feature Request, but don’t hold you breath. It was opened in 2014.

What do you mean by Track description? The MKV element, that is edited by Handbrake as well as by MKVToolNix for naming a track is called “Name”. And as pointed out, this element is ignored and not shown by Plex. Plex only shows Language and Codec_ID.
