Cayars - Setup walk through and some tips and tricks

Would you guys want me to setup a small blog with much of this info in it?
It could make a lot of this info easier to find and “tag”.

it would be appreciated, since your content is gold.

cayars.com appears to be available.

Yep, or Ayars.TV since I already have it.

Actually, why don’t some of you creative types try and find a cool “universal” domain name that would fit. If you think of something good PM it to me. Don’t post it here in public or somebody might scarf it.

Ideally, the domain name should be semi generic that we can all use. The site itself can have a few sections one being specific for Server Ops and another for “clients”.

By Clients I mean we can put together a tutorial for people we share with. What devices “we” have software for. How/where to get the software for the device. How to setup “original” vs lower resolution/bitrates etc.

So then if you share with a new person you can tell them to lookout for the email from Plex. Follow the instructions in the email and then go to site XYZ.com for installation, setup and fine tuning for the best experience.

By not having ayars.tv or cayars.com type thing but something generic it can work for all of us. This way you guys can ALSO HELP with the documentation as well.

Carlo

Thanks for the time and effort, cayars! Well worth a read!

I bookmarked it. Please keep updating and extending!

I’m on board with the documentation idea. It would also be an ideal place for some more in-depth development blogs for interested parties as the forum information can be a chore to dig through sometimes.

Yep, it could definitely grow. I know if setup correctly it could make info easy to find. The harder part will be finding the correct way to express the info: article/webpage, WIKI, BLOG, FORUM formats.

I was kind of leaning towards the conventional web layout/article format for end users. Maybe the same for “tips” like presented in OP message here. Forums we probably don’t need (at least at first). WIKI could be useful for some things especially programming related.

I’m a dot NET guy at heart so I’ll probably use that to host with. Maybe use Umbraco to start with which has most of this functionality. This would definitely work well for the immediate part of pulling the tips/tricks from this thread and also the "client documentation/link section. I could then easily tie in another more powerful WIKI/BLOG/FORUM software if needed.

I’ve got a lot on my table right now with work and some personal projects so I don’t want to do anything super elaborate that will suck more time.

I suck at graphics so hopefully there is someone here that could step up and put together a few nice header graphics that could be used sort of like when you go to plex.tv.

Carlo

I’m all for starting off small. Make it useful and targeted for people who don’t have time or patience to dig through forums and search engines. I’ll gladly provide writing and editing skills as well as sysops if needed. I’ll continue to brainstorm domain ideas and keeping track of article ideas I’ve got floating through my head.

Sent you an idea for domain name via a PM, but count me in to help with this, too. I got time…

Didn’t get a PM from you.

BTW, I know you’re in.

Check now, PM sent again.

As far as ideas, I would love to see the link I sent you maybe redone more generically instead of all focusing on Asustor hardware. Some pretty basic stuff there, and even though my writing style (or lack of one) is all over it, I’m sure someone can make it more presentable.

Most definitely Mike. We can have sections in the op section that are generic Plex setup/tips as well as specific sections on Linux, Windows, Asustor/NAS, maybe even MAC (yuck). That’s the beauty of our collective wisdom, we all do things a bit differently and have semi-different setups.

On another note: Today’s my birthday. Just turned the big five-oh and I don’t know if it’s in my head or not but woke up with a sore jaw, aching back and sore foot. Guess I’m getting old. LOL

On the upside I bought myself a birthday present yesterday. A new Smith and Wesson competition target pistol (SW22 Victory). It’s a lot of gun for a sweat price. Have been looking for a Model 41 Performance Center edition but it’s like they don’t exist. Going out to the range later today with my Dad and Son so I’m sure the kinks/aches and pains will get replaced with a big old grin.

happy birthday cayars!! And remember that fifty-oh are the new forty-oh!!
now one question., of course i don’t expect an answer today…
I’m thinking in converting my library using your scripts (oh my god!!, tons of movies…), do you already recommend this for a large library?? Or better wait for future add-ons to “optimize” in Plex settings?
Most of my library is MKV (around 3000 movies).

I am using his current script now with some mods he gave me for my library (2000 movies, 8000 shows). I can send you a write up of what I did later today.

Well then… everybody sing along with me…

Happy Birthday my friend. I’ve got you beat by another 5 years.

Yeah!, that would be great.
In fact i would need some customization because i need to include other audio tracks and subs languages…

I’ve got you both beat by ~ -25 years. Does being young and spry count as a win?

Are you ok running SQL commands? If so the process I did involved creating batch files for each ‘type’ then running a catch all at the end. Basically I did the following:

  1. Batch process against all non-english tracks (sql script to grab a list, then manually edited that list). I had to manually edit the list because a lot of my movies have “no” language, which 99% means english. But it was easier, it cut my full 2000 list down to about 400. Then I just grabbed the obvious ones and if I missed one, not the end of the world, I can re-rip or grab or whatever that 1 or 2 movies.
  2. Ran the above script against the 70 or so movies that where all non-english by modifying the script to leave all languages encoded, so instead of doing japan for japanese, I just captured all audio in those films
  3. Once that was done I ran a sql script to make a list of all mp4’s that needed the moov_atom moved and I ran that batch file, which is the quickest step.
  4. Finally I ran a new script to create a list of all my non-mp4 movies and that is currently running, on day 8 or so with about 600 movies left.
  5. Then it will be all 8000 tv shows which will probably take about a month.

I also changed some settings in the python script, per @cayars recommendations which I can provide. If the above seems like a good approach to you then I will get the scripts for you at some point today, I need to dig them up.

Damn millennials  ps - I’m only 32 so that makes me one

Half a century! Think about the changes you have seen wrought on the world in the time you have lived. The fear of nuclear winter to the fall of the Soviet Union and the rise of ISIS. Viet Nam to the War on Terror. The dawn of TV in B&W to the huge curved screens of today. From the legacy of “Ask not what your country can do for you” to “You mean with a cloth?”

We are the age that have seen the most changes in the world in the shortest period of time. Some of that change is fantastic for humanity. Some of it saddens the hell out of me.

Happy Birthday “Old Man!” And remember, Age is relative. It’s relative to how you feel when you get up in the morning. If you feel 105 when you wake up, that’s how old you will be the rest of the day. If you feel 5 years old, you’re going to be 5 all day long, too. Try to wake up somewhere in the middle each day and you are doing good.

PS. 52 this year. So I don’t have much on you.
