Cayars - Setup walk through and some tips and tricks

Emby is my main system that I use most but still have Plex installed and will keep it installed.

Emby more or less took over for me for a number of reasons but mostly because of DVR and Android TV clients. DVR for me is so much better on Emby then Plex due to my setup. I’ve got cable, antenna and IP and Plex won’t handle this out of the box while Emby does it in stride. For a long time I was using Emby just for DVR but switching back and forth gets old especially when one does most everything I need. Besides that Plex seems to be moving out of the areas I care most about with all these new offerings that have little to do with my local content while Emby is focused on “my content”.

That isn’t to say one is better than the other. Once is currently just better suited to my current needs. How things will be 6 months or 1 year from now??? That’s why I’ve always used both. Plus it’s great to have a “backup” system.

I answered your email on the setup thing but unfortunately won’t be much help. :frowning:

I added trailers to all my movies but none of them are showing up in Extras nor are they updated inside the Movie Info.

Local Media is selected as a source for movies and all Trailer buttons are selected they should be playing before every movie and they’re not, here’s a screenshot:

Trailers don’t automatically play in Plex and never have.

Wow… stumbled on the post when it started in 15’?! Crazy… still going! w00t – keep on rockin. i havn’t read it all.
But here’s my setup

  • Plex w/Sub - running on a dedicated MacMini - running Linux 4.15.0-23-generic #25-Ubuntu SMP Wed May 23 18:02:16 UTC 2018 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux (Ubuntu Server for those who do not know)
  • SabNZBd
  • Sickbeard
  • 2 Synology NASes mounted to the MacMini server
  • 1 D-Link ShareCenter NAS
  • Ombi - Still a WIP (What’s Ombi? check it out https://ombi.io/ so friends can request their own stuff and not call/text/email/bother you to get stuff added to plex)
  • Cox Giglife/blast Unlimited whatever they call it Whatever speeds down with a modem and not a ONT onsite, which caps at 30MB/s upstrream as well… (Btw if anyone knows who to call over at Cox to get an ONT installed in my house, drop me a line)

Going to go back through and read some more posts here – People want me to switch to Sonarr, or Sickrage, etc. and Ombi requires it pretty much, but not sure why they just can’t add a line or 100 of code to allow user entered indexing sites, like they have dog hardcoded in the app…) if they did that I’d donate, as I’m not a big fan of sonarr and the other programs I won’ t get into it - but been running this setup for 10 plus years without an issue…)_ I was just thinking While I was writing this, I can isntall those apps I do not like on my NASes and just slow them down and not really use them much…

hrmmm… lets see how that goes…

Lots and lots of stuff has been covered over the years. Unfortunately we have went through a forum changes and this has screwed up many of the links and stuff other wise some info would be easier to find.

I used to keep the 1st post as an index but with this “forum” software that’s not really possible in the same way and I’m not up for even trying to do this at this point. Don’t know how long before they switch again.

Plex is almost as bad as Lucas who keeps changing Star Wars. LOL

LOL right on…

keep up the good work on the ongoing post from '15

Cayars, amazing work, I am so glad I found this thread! I am wondering if there is a latest version of the code somewhere? Do you have a github account or anything?

No on the github. It’s posted here in the thread.

Your reply prompted another scan through this thread, was able to find the code on someone’s google drive. @cayars Do you have any issue with me posting this on github for ease of access?

Please don’t do that. I’d like to keep all info here.

Ok, sounds good

Boy, that zip file is hidden very well on this thread, took me half the day to figure out what would be considered page 52 on the old forum, when I finally did that and located Cayars post where he says here’s the zip, there was no zip!

Could the zip have been stripped or something? @Cayars, could you Please repost it or otherwise make it obvious exactly where it is with a fresh link? I’ve clicked sooooo many broken “Ooops…” links, I think I may lose my mind if I spend any more time scrolling through this seemingly endless forum page.

I gots me an ider. Mights not be to aftser the holiders but’s I’ll modisfy the firsty post with a links to the currents download.

Translation. I’ll see if I can modify the first post and put a link for the conversion scripts up top. Then when anyone asks we can refer them back to message #1.

Give me a couple of days due to the Holidays but if you don’t see this done in a reasonable time frame “remind me”.

I’m not actually using the scripts as is anymore as I’ve moved on to H.265 and a different backend platform that handles things much better so I sort of lost interest in the need for the scripts (sorry).

I understand, I have thought about just getting a beefier mobo/cpu, but this 6-core AMD phenom II handles everything else I do with my NAS (which is a LOT), just chokes out transcoding family videos. Modifying the initial post (maybe with some bolded language at the top about the initial post always containing the most current links/info and the current date as of the latest modifications) is definitely the way to go.

Happy Holidays!

Merry Christmas to you also.

Do you have a GPU in the server or have a CPU that supports QuickSync? That could probably help a lot.

No, I didn’t think about that. I’m running Nas4Free (FreeBSD), no QuickSync support for the CPU that I can see, but maybe I can find a GPU on ebay that’s compatible with this old rig. Thanks for the tip!

FYI for anyone following along, I used Plex’s optimize function on a few videos (optimized for TV), the resulting videos directed played with no buffering or messages about my server not being powerful enough and my CPU barely lifted a finger. Good option if you only have a few videos, but I have nearly 1,000 spread across numerous folders.

can’t get convert.zip as ftp://ayars.tv is down

Looking to strip the subtitle to srt and re-encode to x.264 from an OTA recording made to .ts files

Politely bumping after the holidays, per your request. Can you put the link for the conversion scripts up in post #1?

New forum software isn’t letting me upload it here. It’s telling me the file is to big. :frowning:

I’ll try and put it on google drive and put a link in the first post.

It’s been moved to Github.
