Plex was working beautifully for me for months, then in the past week or so it developed a problem and now it’s basically useless.
I had a look at the logs and i’m seeing this error repeatedly:
CERT: Error in TLS handshake: short read
When i play media directly on the server (web interface) it seems to work perfectly fine. When i try to access on devices on my LAN including Apple TV & IOS devices it does not work. Hangs for a long time trying to play the content and then i get a “playback queue could not be retrieved” error on screen. One interesting thing i’ve noticed is it is not consistent, some content plays on IOS devices some does not. I can’t figure it out!
Things i’ve tried:
- Rebooting router (Apple Airport Extreme, running latest firmware)
- Removing & reinstalling Plex server
- Rebooting all remote devices / apps
- Tried various security methods (required / preferred / disabled)
Nothing works.
Help!
Can you restart PMS, wait 3 minutes, then get me the logs again. The certification stuff is done at PMS start so I’d like to see what is shown then.

here you go - thanks for your help!
Your new log shows everything is fine with the security certificate so the errors you are seeing are just the client disconnecting from PMS for some reason.
Looking back at your old log, I see you are trying to play “The Impossible” from your iTunes folder. Did you purchase this movie from iTunes? If so, it probably has DRM and cannot be played back through Plex. If not, I’ll need to see your log from the iOS app. I then see you playing an episode of It’s Always Sunny and this appears to work fine.

Yes - some content works some doesn’t. It almost seems like stuff that has been added recently works better which doesn’t make much sense to me. No - there is definitely no DRM on the files. I can play that same file in the web interface just fine.
How do i get you the IOS app logs? By the way - i’m experiencing this not just on iphone/ipad but Apple TV 4 app as well.
UPDATE: IOS Logs attached. Seems to be a network issue, but it’s inconsistent like i said. Some files will stream, others won’t. But ALL will play on the web interface so i know it’s not the files. Also - files that used to work are not working. My DNS is using my default gateway currently but i have also tried Google DNS. I’ve tried this on all devices.
I’m not very familiar with iPhones, but that is not the Plex App log. Read this, https://support.plex.tv/hc/en-us/articles/201636593-iOS-Logs.
