Hi All,
I was wondering if there was any chance Plex could come up with a solution to add Chapter info to the meta information within the Plex server rather than just using chapter information contained within the file.
My content is made up of a number of different file types and qualities and having the ability to pull chapter information from an online 3rd party source (I think this exists) to allow all of my mixed media types to have chapter info would be amazing.
Just a thought for us movie enthusiasts.
I’m not even bothered if this is not 100% accurate (as it’s from a 3rd party) as it would be better than having nothing.
Thanks all
D.
You can mux almost any type of file into an MKV container.
(remux = no re-encoding and therefore no change of quality)
Which gives you the ability to embed named chapters quite easily.
The chapterdb.org database which was taken over by Plex is not getting any new entries.
And it only contains regular tv shows and movies anyway.
If you have a lot of custom and special kind of content, there won’t be any good centralized source for chapter information, I’m afraid.
Adding to Otto’s point:
While the chapterdb.org database is great to lookup chapter titles, it’s data is also… inconsistent with lots of different versions for the same titles (e.g. from different cuts or releases → DVD vs. Blu-Ray, regional differences…). There’s a lot of entries with only “Chapter 1”, “Chapter 2”, … titles.
Personally I like using the data but only to manually pick the right entry. It’s then rather simple to apply that to an existing file (e.g. using MKVToolNix for MKV containers, Subler for mp4/m4v containers on macOS…) – minus the typos
For reference:
Hey,
Like I said, I’d much rather this be a Plex server solution rather than having to remux all my media.
And should be relatively easy using their owned 3rd party source.
However I also assume there are other commercial DB’s / data sources that Plex could use for this data, similar to the source of their trailers for Plex pass owners.
