I love that PMP now supports chapters embedded in MKVs, but it would be great if:
a) PMS allowed us to add our own ‘virtual chapters’ to all file types and rename all chapters
and
b) Players had a menu item when playing to bring up the chapters with thumbnail and assigned chapter name
This would be great especially for concert/music dvds and home videos.
The scope of Plex has never been to manipulate media itself. Plex, of course, provides features to gather metadata from various online services (thetvdb.org and themoviedb.org) and features for users to record information in the Plex Media Server database to supplant most metadata (description, poster artwork etc)… but not chapter information.
I’m happy Plex makes use of chapter metadata embedded in MP4 media.
I suggested (some time ago) improved chapter support at a time when chapters weren’t supported consistently across different Plex apps. Then the Plex iOS app had no support for chapters. Since then the Plex development team has made substantial improvements in Plex apps to chapter support.
I’m very pleased chapters are supported in the web app, iOS app, tvOS app and Plex Media Player. Plex web app and Plex Media Player are limited to “previous chapter” and “next chapter” keyboard shortcuts (i.e. they don’t provide chapter poster and selection features) but this isn’t significant for me.
Using Subler (free) and other paid tools I can add/edit/remove chapters in MP4 container media. I not sure what tools exist to add/edit/remove chapter information in MKV container media.
I feel chapter features in the Plex apps I use is now satisfactory and development energy can concentrate on other priorities. Of course, others might feel additional chapter features should still be a priority.
