Cheapest server?

Hey friends. Been a year since i posted. My trusty 2011 macmini which has been serving my local server for the last decade is dying (HDD failure). All my files are on external HDDs.

I’m debating the costs to replace the HDD or buying a new mac mini or something else? Are there any good options under $500 you’d recommend?

Just something simple i can copy files to from my macbook when i need to. I have only 2TB of files so doesnt need to be fancy.

Let me know if you have suggestions.

Check local computer stores for used / refurbished desktops.

Also small NAS such as the Synology DS220+ ($300 USD on Amazon w/o disks). Add 2 x 4TB drives in RAID and you’ve 4TB space, drive failure protection, and room for growth. You can re-purpose the external drives for backups or other uses.

See NAS compatibility spreadsheet for info on other makes/models, including hardware accelerated transcoding performance.

Thank you!
I will look at this. A friend also offered me an older server with Unraid that I think will work. I just use local access, single-stream so doesn’t need to be too fancy.

Is there an easy way to migrate server settings to a new machine?

See the support document linked below. Moving between operating systems presents difficulties, as some information is stored in different locations (Windows Registry, Mac plist, etc). If all users are local it may be easier to start from scratch on the new system.
