Storage upgrade: NAS/DAS options

Hello guys
I have been reading this forum for quite a long time and used plex for several years on different platforms and using different devices. I have a couple of questions, which I hope some of you can help me out with.

Currently my set up consists of:

  1. Mac mini, running Server Version#: 1.20.1.3252
  2. 2TB external HDD attached to the mac mini. Problem, as you can see is:
Filesystem Size Used Avail Capacity iused ifree %iused
/dev/disk3s1 1.8Ti 1.7Ti 114Gi 94% 14325717 935619 94%
  1. On the LAN we usually stream on an apple tv that is connected to the main TV.
  2. Its just family use, no other devices are accessing to the server over the web, just us from time to time when we are on vacation.

This configuration has been working like a charm for the past two years, but as the media folders are growing I am thinking on storage upgrade. I see the following options:

  1. Acquiring a NAS, but not using it as media server but keeping the mac mini as server. In this case, as I dont need too much processing power I have my eyes on: Synology DS220j + 2x8TB HDD (al should be around 650 EUR)

  2. Getting a Direct Access Storage somehow equivalent to the above option. Do you have some suggestions?

Mainly the whole point is just upgrading the storage, but keeping the plex server running on the mac mini as it has been really reliable.

Thank you for your suggestions.
A.

I’ve been happy with drobo. I’ve two 5Ds.

Thank you afullmark. What model do you have / storage capacity / disc numbers / is it like a parallel with backup or just plain?

Pop along to drobo.com

I have one backup to another.
