Cheech and Chong (bug/easter egg)?

I have two Cheech and Chong movies, “Up in Smoke” and “Still Smokin”. They automatically get a collection made for each of them “UP IN SMOKE” and “STILL SMOKIN” and each movie gets assigned to the collection. I remove them from each collection and delete the collections but they keep getting recreated and re-added. Is this a hard coded ‘joke’?

Check if they are in a mp4 container. If they are, see if the container has an embedded Album meta tag. You want to delete that, because it will cause the movies to get added to a collection with the name of the Album tag.

Do also verify the state of the selector “Minimum automatic collection size” in the properties of the library, on the Advanced tab

huh, how strange, why would you ever want that to happen?

Why would you ever assign an Album meta tag to a movie, if not intentionally so?
Consider clearing the checkbox “Prefer local metatags”, if you don’t want Plex to do this.

There are actually some real-world applications for the behaviour.
The behavior is documented here, in the FAQ section: https://support.plex.tv/articles/201273953-collections/

Yep, “Title” was set to these.
UP IN SMOKE.Title1.DVDRip
STILL SMOKIN.Title1.DVDRip

And I get it makes sense for audio albums and creating collections for each album. Seems silly to even consider it for movies. 1 collection for each movie?

Thanks for the help.

Well, that’s the silly behavior we know from Handbrake and other apps.
Put the actual movie title in there or clear it.

If you have several movies which belong together, you can put ídentical content in their Album tags. Presto: an automatic collection with all movies in it which belong there.
The Album tag has nothing to do with the Title tag, btw. They are distinct things.

You might want to use an dedicated app for inspecting and modifying meta tags, instead of relying on your file explorer. Their “Properties” dialog tends to miss important tags.
On Windows, I recommend mp3tag
