Planning to upgrade my router (fibre). The last time i did this using a cheap router with an external 6Tb HDD (powered) containing all my media connected via USB3.0 it would have many issues. Now Asus (router) for example have 1.8 Ghz quad-core processor with dual USB 3.1 connection. Am I thinking in the right direction if I want my Mac Book Pro (Plex Server) to be untethered from media HDD. I also use the Plex app on my Samsung TV a lot. All devices are hard wired to internet except MBP and iDevices.
As long as when you mount the drive on your server computer it remains stable then it should be fine. IMO your computer should be wired to router too ( especially if many streams at once) but an AC wifi connection will probably be fine for most things.
make sure you turn off server when disconnecting from network. Probably a good idea to turn off “empty trash after a scan” in library settings until you are sure things are working well.
I would never trust a router with a hard drive as a file server, nor as a plex server.
Even with such a processor (still a low powered ARM cpu).
I would not expect much reduction in issues.
But that is just me.
Would you be able to suggest a minimum spec for such a router (processor and usb spec). I used a usb3.0 last time, but the processor was i am sure well below 1.4 GHz. Thanks for your advise.
I am an optimist at heart, but suspect that you may be correct re. on going issues. I may end up with a 1.4 GHz mac mini as my server, freeing up the MBP. Cheers
no. personally like @TeknoJunky I would not use a router for this at all. If it says you can mount the drive to your computer then it should work and hopefully give you good throughput but not something i have personal experience with.
That’s what I do. ( 2.5ghz i5 2014 mini)
Good info. I see a refurbished mac mini 2.5 ghz in the mac store so potential here. In hind sight, would you change anything.
For years I have been running the server on my Mini and just had multiple USB3 drives connected to it. I finally started running out of space on them ( and they were just old) so I bought a NAS and some NAS drives. Currently all my media files are on the NAS ( a QNAP 832x) and the server still runs on my Mini.
Thanks. Price wise a new Mac Mini 3.6ghz quad‐core eighth-generation intel core i3 processor is similar to a Refurbished Mac Mini 2.8GHz dual-core Intel Core i5. Reading reviews on the i3 model at the moment.
